Oh my god, tons. Google Mandopop, Cantopop, Pinoy Rock, Pinoy Hiphop, K-Pop, and J-Pop. There's a big rock and jazz scene in Japan, rock to a lesser extent in China, Hong Kong in particular. There's a small but growing rap scene in East-Asia too. The Philippines is known for rock and hiphop. The music industry in Japan alone is probably as big as North America's. Pretty much every young Japanese star has been in one of these J-Pop bands at some point. It's just not vary popular here outside of the Otaku and Asian community. I don't listen to this stuff myself but I have friends that do.

Nobody except the Asians have heard of these people in English speaking countries. I don't even know who the hell they are so none of these fit the thread.

His thread title says Non-American...and his implies that all English-Speaking bands are American...which they are not.

If you read the rest of the OP he continues to explain any bands that are popular world-wide and known by all yet don't speak English. There are none. He's trying to get at Pop status but no none English speaking bands or artists have.

Just because no data were compiled it doesn't mean they don't exist.

Maybe everyone in Mexico loves Los Grande Burritos but since none of the agencies bothered to compile the data and run the statistics you can't say for sure that Los Grande Burritos is not a real band and people didn't love them.

The point you are forgetting is that the numbers you are looking at, record sales, cd sales etc... really only make sense for society of the past 50-60 years or so even in America. Before that while the average family might have owned a few albums the entire economic structure of the world was different and consumerism was not the crazy buy buy buy society we have now, at least no where near as intense. It's only in the last 10 years or so that the developing nations like China, India, Brazil and others have gotten to the point that their middle class has similar buying power. This being the case it makes total sense that the top 10 or 100 records would all be American because by and large America, and Europe, has been where the market has been. I don't doubt that in the coming decades these charts will start to show names that no one has heard of before. Just look at the market in India and China. Of course no one will be buying CDs any more, which is another reason such charts are skewed.

its mostly american/western.
because of quality/innovation and well the advantage of the english speaking west sharing a similar culture as well.

sure china has stars, same with japan, but well most of the music produced is pretty dire. there is no chinese michael jackson, or even mariah carey. either their cultures or governments are oppressive and ruin creativity.

I've never heard of him. Haven't ever seen him on tv or anything and I watch tv every day and read the news as well so how is he a pop icon over here? I guarantee you if I ask random people on the street who this guy is they won't know so he doesn't work either.

Yeah being in Speed Racer didn't help him either haha.

I don't get it... so you want to know about non-english speaking bands that are popular in their respective countries, and that AREN'T popular in america. And you expect us, an American heavy forum, to know about these bands that aren't popular in our country or even in our language? And of course if we knew about them, doesn't that defeat the purpose of what you're looking for?

My retard-o-meter doesn't go high enough to read this thread accurately

This is one of the dumbest threads I've ever read at ATOT, and that's saying something. Why am I not surprised that it's some guy in the Army posting this.
