I was sitting over my girlfriend's last night, and I was reading about the pope's condition. I'm not a practicing Catholic, and I don't agree with the Pope's view on things such as birth control/Terry Shaivo/abortion/gay marriage, but I still have a great deal of respect for someone who has always promoted peace and sought to heal rifts with the Jews and eastern christianity. So, it makes me very sad to see him in this state. My girlfriend, on the other hand, said she doesn't give two sh!ts about him, since he hasn't exactly had an affect on her life, and since she isn't catholic it doesn't really matter to her. I got mad at her for saying that, but what is more common, my view or her view, among noncatholics?

I'm a jew... and yes I respected John Paul II

No matter what you say, Onery will keep on belitting his achievements as being merely incremental and thus insigificant. Don't bother wasting your time, I'm not a practicing Christian either, but there's no reason why we should even waste time with someone who doesn't listen anyways.

and i respected him as well.

you don't have to believe everything someone does to respect them. if that was the case, nobody would ever respect anyone.

As usual, an intellectually inept agnostic chimes in with a useless comment such as the one quoted.

Yeah, I'm an Orthodox Christian and still watched some of the funeral. Actually, there was an Orthodox patriarch as well as several bishops, priests, and deacons there. Don't know if anyone watched the funeral but they were the ones who did the part at the end of the service, before the body was taken into the Sistine Chapel. It's funny, because originally we were the same church then split away in the early AD times.

I'm glad you don't get a vote.

I don't respect the pope as a leader, Christian, or mostly as a person. How he handled the childhood sexual abuse stuff was horrible IMO.

The pope leads the Catholic Church worldwide. The childhood sexual abuse stuff was part of the American Catholic church's fault, and had to do with the way the local dioscese archbishops handled things, and very little to do with the Vatican. The Pope doesn't get that involved with individual dioscese's like that.
