If you're like me you get plenty of unsolicited calls from telemarketers. Or a lot of hang ups if you're using an answering machine to screen your calls. If you want these to stop, it might help to get on your state's no-call list, if it has one.

Here are some states which may have an online form you can fill out. Certainly some folks will be exempt from observing the list, such as political candidates and fire/police organizations asking for donations, but every little bit helps. Many of these are free.

I have SBC's Privacy Manager that works with CID.

Also, I've been using my cell phone number all over the place, so I'm waiting for my first solicitation call. Does this happen? anyone ever been called on their cell phine by a telemarketer?

Sorry I can't find anything on Illinois. I suppose if there is no number/website for your state you can always consult the following:

Federal law prohibits telephone solicitations before 8 a.m. or after 9 p.m. Telemarketers are required to identify themselves with their name, the company they represent and a phone number at which their company may be contacted. You may ask any telemarketer to put you on a do-not-call list if you do not want them to contact you again.

Apparently if they don't comply with your request, you can sue them for each subsequent call, something like $500 first offense, then $1000 each afterwards; But I don't know how difficult it would be to actually win.

From what I understand things can get really MESSY when you go after a telemarketer. Although, there was a lady that did this, and she won.

I have been using my cell phone as well. And yes, a telemarketer did call my cell phone before. Usually it is an unknown ID, that is why i dont answer these unknown ID's no more.

What you do is ask for their name, an phone number. Then tell them to put you on a do not call list. Make sure you record all your phone calls, very easy if you have a computer. Then if they call back again after 2-3 days(they are given a grace period) then if you record it it, make sure you ask why they keep calling when you told them to put you on a do not call list.
Then go to Small Claims Court (SCC) and file action for EACH call after the first time you said to put you on a do not call list. And I think each call is $1000. So if you get a lot of calls like that lady did, then you make out like a theif. And its a easy $1000 if you copied each of your messages.

We've had this in Texas for several months. Although the volume is down a bit,
there are so many exceptions, it doesn't put an end to it.
Companies that you have done business with in the past are exempted,
as are all charities. Plus, some companies just choose to ignore it.

The bad thing about the Texas system is that the list of "do not call" numbers Texas provides to telemarketers includes names and addresses along with phone numbers. For someone trying to keep their unlisted phone number private it would be pretty dumb to sign up.

Oklahoma will have it's No Call list ready to go on Jan 1, 2003. There was actually an attempted scam here locally where someone was calling people claiming to be from the Attorny General's office, and the homeowner needed to be charged the "$500 signup fee" to get their number on the list! :disgust:
Of course there is no fee -- freakin scum trying to rip people off and make the legitimate folks look bad in the process... Unbelievable!

Subscribing to the Colorado "no-call-list" has made a HUGE difference in the incoming sh*t over the land lines.

Now what we need is an e-mail spam equivalent! :|

Save your money, people. They basically just take your money, force the telemarketing companies to pay them for your name, then do it all over again in 6 months. It may stop the few companies that don't realize it is all a joke from calling, but that's about it. If you look at all the loopholes and how lenient the rules are, you'd laugh.

I guess I should mention that I am speaking of the TX no call list. It may actually be legit and
work in other states...

I am in Florida, it is $10 for the first year, $5 for the following years. Since I signed up early this year the amount of junk calls has decreased by about 90%. Most of what comes in is during the afternoon when no one is usually home.

I really wish they would "reverse" things and make it so you have to sign up TO BE CALLED!! and if you do not sign up, you CAN'T BE CALLED!!

Also, you can opt yourself OUT of "national telemarketing lists" here:

Direct Marketing Association

I did this several years ago and our call volume has dropped to almost ZERO. I took some other steps, too, so don't know that this is really what did it.

Now, I noticed that they're now charging $5 to sign up online, but you can do it by mail for free.

The DMA is an organization that fights for telemarketing rights, but at least they realize that to do so over time, they must address an individual's right to not have to deal with the constant interruptions.

Fight the B@stards!
