Do P4s have special PSUs?

I'm looking at a friends computer which does nothing when you press the power button. It seems to be the PSU but when I looked at the connectors to the MB, there were 2 of them. I've always had AMD machines and only 1 connection is made there. Do P4 boards use a special kind of PSU? If so, I guess I'm out of luck to test whether it's the PSU or not.

the p4s use an extra 12v connector.

Pretty much everyone is using "ATX 12V" supplies now. The extra connector is an extra 12V supply that both AMD and Intel use now.

So can I swap the PSU with one from my AMD system to test?

No, probably not since the board may not be reliable without the 12V connector, so you wouldn't be able to tell much if it didn't work. You will need an ATX 12V supply.

Incidentally, the newest boards integrate the 4 pin 12v connector into the main connector, making a single 24 pin connector.

The 20 pin part is the same as far as I know. The 12v connector is just an add on for extra power. I believe it will be okay to try your power supply if you strip the other system of anything it doesn't need to minimize the load.
