For what I provide for my company, I am paid appropriately.

Doctors on the other hand... How can someone be completely wrong and still get paid their full billable amount? "I *think* this is what's wrong, try this out and let me know. BTW, that'll be $131 for the 17 minutes you spent with me 10 of which was wait time."

Fuck you doctors.

none of the above

Agreed. Most of these professions have a huge salary range that depends on experience/education/etc. I think its more about the employer rather than the profession. I worked as a contractor for a small federal agency, and I can say that EVERY fed was overpaid. Entry to mid level IT hired as federal were making 100-130k, about twice what contractors were making. Even the federal admin assistants were making 70-80k.

Except that my billable time is better spent doing billable things rather than fixing computer issues.

That is the entire point of tech support.
duh that's why you need less paid and less capable/different skillset people to handle that stuff.
IT people may treat you like dumbasses because IT attracts nerds, bitterness included, or there really are dumbasses in your company so they're prejudiced.

Anyway here no one is overpaid, and engineers and IT people are definitely underpaid thanks to massive salary dumping happening because of the italian cross-border commuters. Then they wonder why people isn't attracted to those professions...

Well, that, and being able to code doesn't make it any easier to find the switch on the power strip.

I mean, there's, like, dust down there. Eew.

That's why tort reform is needed. Medical expense are high due to legal vultures who feed off the work of others. Malpractice has gone from defending people against fraud to attacking doctors over a judgment call, or plain bad luck. Humans are the most complicated machines we work on, but for some reason, people expect things to get fixed perfectly with zero mistakes. If that's the way we're gonna roll, it should apply to everyone all the way down to the McDonalds worker. Forgot the pickles? Now you're getting a crushing lawsuit fucker...

For some reason I had the impression you were a doctor of some sort... But you post the dumbest threads, I'm starting to wonder if I was mistaken.

He's not a real doctor -- he's a pharmacist.

I would normally have voted lawyer, but their salaries have plummeted so far the last few years that I don't think it is the case now. I voted pharmacist as I think it is a job that could mostly (not totally) be replaced by computers.

Instead of $12 they should get $10.

My hate for IT comes from this: my entire company does programming, yet IT people treat us like idiots when we know how to code better than they do.

In most companies, application development is part of the IT department.

Oh, and it goes both ways -- my last job had an "ace programmer" that was complaining that his new app was slow due to the network. We told him there was no evidence of that. He kept insisting and told the end user that. Guess what? The dumbass was copying a multi-hundred MB Access database over the wire to the client rather than use SQL server and perform transactions like I told him to.

For the actual amount of work done on a daily basis, possibly.

Truth be told, outside of upgrades, projects, maintenance and emergency situations, there's not much to do... mostly routine maintenance, daily checks and meetings.
We're paid for our knowledge and ability to put out fires when emergencies arise.

Then again, a good IT guy would've properly designed the system so that nothing beyond routine maintenance is needed.

Lawyers without a doubt. I'd say some of them probably earn what they make, but I think overall it's the most overpaid job by far.

This. Pay me more because you don't need 10 people to support shit that wasn't implemented properly in the first place. Its only fair 1-2 of those people's would be salaries be added to mine :awe:

If you think IT's overpaid, don't worry... Most companies appear to be importing Indians and/or outsourcing to India.

Lawyers... Funny shit there. My impression is that new lawyers are being paid shit while the partners still rake it in, which means that the cost to clients hasn't changed.

And then submit his budget only to have it hacked to shred despite his vigorous defense of necessary items. 'I told you so' doesn't feel nearly as fulfilling if I have to work a shit ton of extra off hours to fix something I knew would break but wasn't allowed to spend the money to prevent.

Not that I am bitter or anything...

Anyone that isn't an executive or in finance should make less than minimum wage (minimum wage should be abolished).

The disgust for IT comes when you have some community college dropout or some guy fresh out of college acting like he is the smartest man in the room, very narcissistic. Sure you get this with other positions some of the time but IT its 9/10.

Dentistry is by far the biggest ripoff biz in the med field. I have 3 people in my family and life who work at dentist practices and I can honestly tell you the markup/profit margin is somewhere in the 5000%. Biggest medical scammers in the world.

Lawyers are obviously the most overpaid overall tho.

Most IT people are underpaid, but correcting that doesn't always mean giving them a raise. It could be by hiring adequate staff so IT people don't have to work 60 hours a week.

Sadly, most businesses see IT as a waste of money; a bottomless pit that only takes but doesn't give anything back. What they fail to realize is that without IT, they're out of business. This is the year 2013, not 1973.

Yup. My work has been slowly letting go staff and not rehiring people. First they were saying we sit around doing nothing. Now when the shit hits the fan and all of their systems are down, they're complaining how we don't fix it fast enough.

I've see CEO's of Fortune 500 companies get BLOWN AWAY by some punk kid showing them a keyboard shortcut in some common app like Excel.

Or whip up a simple script, put it on the intranet site, that allows the CEO to see a report pulled from the Oracle DB anytime he wants, whereas he used to wait days or WEEKS for his request for that report to trickle down through a pile of useless managers.

That being said, IT/coding guys always seem to get themselves in some sort of smarty-pants dick measuring contest.

I was on a con call between two companies trying to coordinate the transfer of some sensitive data over XML. When it came to details like SSL, protocols, IP filters, etc, it was like every IT guy just had to throw 2 cents in to sound smart and one up everyone else.

I think you're lying. ATOT is loaded with IT people, and that never happens around here.

I voted pharmacists.
They just follow the doctor's orders.
They provide absolutely zero value add.

Most jobs in IT don't pay as much as people think. The ones that do pay well are those that don't require any knowledge of tech, like various management and project leader positions etc.
