Do people still download MP3's?

I feel like I'm totally out of the loop here. I'll admit I used to do it, but, I've heard, these days, the MP3 download world the online equivalent of a Central African brothel? (bad virus joke)

So, are they still out there? what programs work best.

Last time I hunted for music, Napster was still big and Morpheus was in it's infancy

Correct, start with kazaa lite. Another good source may be WINMX.

I thought you couldn't get over 128Kb soungs with kazaa?

You can change that....registry setting in regular Kazaa, and I think Kazaa lite does it automaticcally

I use WinMX, I didnt like all the ads with Kazaa Lite. Ive been happy with it, I just wish that when you select "audio file" it would allow .ape files to come up in the search. I share my entire Monkey's Audio collection, including MANY rarities, but I have yet to see but one person stumble upon it.

Yup. While it might not be the best program, technically speaking, it has the biggest user base.

i download mp3s at a casual pace ... usually i buy the CDds now ...
However there was a time when i averaged close to 1GB per day of new material ....

They are still out there ...

If i was not lazy and i wanted more stuff .. I could easily go and dl stuff.

Programs i use to download: FlashFXP for windows and gftp for linux.
Most of the stuff i get these days comes from uploads to my Servu FTP site.

another thing i have found necessary for mp3s is IRC. I prefer BitchX, and i lurk on undernet, but i know there are lots of good chans on Efnet, and i have been to a few on Ircnet ... Many people like mIRC .. i personally cant stand that client

DC++ is the way to go, I still use kazaa lite for the stuff I can't find there. At first it was hard to find stuff on DC++, but then I downloaded glo-search, and now I can search all the hubs at once, and even find the users to resume downloads from.

The downsides of DC++ is the users really, some of them cheat and others just don't want to share!

ive only ever bought a handful, i hate spending 15 bucks on a cd that hs 2 songs i want....sometimes if i find a compilation i like, which isnt too often
