most of the ones I see say photo in their name
does the photo printer behave like a normal printer(can it print regular stuff like text)?
and can I use regular paper in them?
Yes they will do fine on regular text. The majority of "photo" printers simply have more functionality built in to them; such as the ability to power on the printer and print directly from a camera or memory card without ever having to turn on... or much less own... a computer. You will also normally see that photo printers use anywhere from six to eight colors of ink as opposed to the traditional four. This ink issue could be the only cause for concern as when you print text you will be using your black ink so it will have to be replaced more often if you're doing a mix of photos and text.
Canon iP4000 $80-100. after rebate right now. Large pigment-based black ink cartridge for text PLUS a smaller dye-based black ink cartridge for photo and graphic printing. The best of both worlds. The current Canon line (iP3000, iP4000, iP5000) has the lowest TCO in the inkjet market. And the output is excellent. Consumer Reports current best buy at its normal selling price of ~$150.
. Hear that giant sucking sound? That's the sound of current Pixmas being sucked up as word of the much higher TCO of their replacements (announced and some already on the shelves) gets around.
Canon's single-ink range (4000, 5000 series) are specifically made for this. They have five ink tanks, with two distinctly different blacks - one is mixable black for photo printing, the other (big) one is pigmented black for best contrast in text.
