One time we went on a team building for work and this dude would not eat anywhere that wasn't halal. Took us like an hour to find a place to eat and it was overpriced and crappy. Needless to say he wasn't very popular.

Agreed, that's really stupid. If he has such strict requirements he should have figured out a place that has halal food ahead of time, or just eaten food that is guaranteed to be halal (such as non-meat dishes).

If a picky eater is quiet about their pickyness I have no problem with their choice.

If they look down on me for enjoying my chicken feet, fish curry or sea urchin gonads I likely wouldn't be dining with them again.

My son for the longest time wouldn't eat any food that wasn't beige in colour. It wasn't so much the colour of the food, it was just that he wouldn't eat veggies and didn't care for red meat. He ate a lot of pancakes, french toast, chicken and brown rice. Luckily he grew out of his "pickyness" and now will try just about anything and likes most foods.

I also worked with a guy once who proudly proclaimed he wouldn't eat anything that didn't have feet. He would eat no veggies, no fish, no shellfish (a clam only has one foot). I never asked him if he would eat rabbit or alligator but my guess would have been no.

Picky eaters who are picky because of food allergies are reasonable, sometimes.

Picky eaters who became picky because they could and thus inconvenience others who cook with/for them should be force fed their most-hated vegetable for a month.

No because I am one...
Hate raw tomatoes and onions. This includes ketchup. (But fried onion rings are good & cooked tomatoes are tolerable. Would still rather have pizza white...)
Can't stand mayo. This unfortunately severely limits the sandwich selection most places.
The texture of green peas ruins whatever they are in.
Tuna (and some other fish too) stinks from a block away.
Don't like sours (i.e. the "salads" you get in a Mediterranean place).
I guess thats all the biggies but they sure do seem to come up a lot.

Not even in the same ballpark, I consider myself Picky however I will give anything a chance. I dont relegate myself to any one "culture" of food though. I like American, Asian, Mexican, Medeterranian etc, I'm just picky on the dishes from each.

Define "delicious international food"

Well.

Ranges from americanized foods like teriyaki, panda express, etc.
To authentic Thai, Indian, Chinese, Japanese, , Korean, etc. The little buses with Mexican food can be pretty good, etc.

Eating Chinese with a Chinese guy from Hong Kong at fuckin deelish authentic Chinese restaurants in Vancouver, BC is pretty dope...
I have an Indian co-worker who likes taking me to legit Indian restaurants.

I used to work at a computer store with several Koreans... they had some delicious home-made food and pointed me towards some good Korean restaurants.

There is pretty good Chinese around here too....

Plus things like mongolian grills, etc.

And that's all within a 10 mile radius of me, most of them can be had within 3 miles.

I could drive 20 miles to Seattle and get pretty much anything.

I'm constantly on the lookout for new things to try....

Key to "authentic" food is to find a restaurant where you are the only white person (only works if you are white). Also, the "ethnicity" of the restaurant, and the ethnicity of the restaurant personnel must be the same.

Yep... My friend and I were the only two white... or hell, non-Chinese people out of probably 300-400 people in this Dim Sum restaurant in Vancouver. That is authentic.

Some of the closer places to me don't have all X ethnicity customers in the X food restaurant... But if everyone working there is X, then it's often a good deal.

I can definitely go to some Korean places that are 90% Korean customers though

And my Indian friend who takes me to Indian restaurants, used to be a manager at some large Indian restaurant in London... He knows his authentic Indian food...he often gets info conversations with the staff/owners of restaurants about how they run their restaurant, asks about how they make various foods, etc.
Hell he's a pretty damn good cook too, he's a vegetarian though so I don't eat a lot of what he brought to work.

I eat almost everything; and the people who dislike a certain food without any logical reason annoys me (i.e. I knew a few people who simply wouldn't eat anything that had bean sprouts.... its nearly tasteless! )

What's with all this dislike of tomatoes and onions?

Sliced, raw tomatoe with salt, lemon, and maybe some hot sauce=win.

Grilled onion=win

I can understand that sometimes there are mushy tomatoes that taste weird, like if they are too ripe.

I'd rather be mad than eat raw tomatoes, in any case.

So wait, if I take a freshly cut tomato and put it on a burger, that is gross?

Veggies have no place on a burger. A burger is meat + cheese + more meat. I like my burger to be hot, when I'm eating a hot burger and bite into a cold veggie it makes my mouth unhappy. And I think a hot tomato would be even more nasty on one lol.

Reciprocal QFT!

Meat, Cheese, Sauce. Only exception is jalapenoes, because they are worth it and good hot.

I LIKE pickles, but they have no place on my burgers.
For instance, a Whopper... I'll order no lettuce, tomato, or onion. Always just get it with the pickles because I like pickles.... but invariably I pick out the pickles as I get to them and eat them. I'll eat them beside my burger but not on it.

I can vouch for mothers ruining things with their phrases...

I can't tell you how many times my mom tried to convince me that I wouldn't be able to taste the lettuce or onions or whatever...

That makes no fucking sense. If I couldn't taste it anyways, why the fuck did you just spend money buying something and chopping up something to add to a food if it didn't add any flavor???

So any time someone tells me you can't taste X anyways, I never believe em.

As it is, I can be eating something... say a burrito from Taco Bell... and there will be 1 tiny little piece of lettuce, and that fucks up the flavor for the entire bite... lettuce overpowers any other flavor and makes me gag. I really think I am chemically incompatible with lettuce... not allergic, but it's not edible either.

There's not much that I flat out don't like and I love to try new things, but I'm fairly health conscious. If it's high in trans or saturated fats, I'll pass. The only person this ever offends is my wife's stepmother, but she's a bitch on wheels so it doesn't bother me.

Da fuck?!

Now go google Balut.

I'd try it.

Think what you will...
but to me lettuce tastes like dirt mixed with some other awful flavor. Lettuce is pretty much one of the most disgusting things to me...

I tried to eat a big leaf of lettuce on a dare and tried but couldn't.

I can make myself eat anything else, shit I don't like... including onions, tomatoes, mushrooms, sauerkraut, etc... but lettuce is too much.

So I did some Googling...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Supertaster
Sounds pretty close to me.

Here is the list of problem foods. My responses in bold
As a whole, supertasters are less likely to enjoy and thus consume certain foods, although individual supertasters can certainly enjoy and consume these foods. Documented examples for either lessened preference or consumption include:
alcoholic beverages[11] Beer, wine, whiskey, etc is DISGUSTING. Vodka is my go-to tried & true liquor. I like mixed drinks containing some liquors I wouldn't drink alone (long islands for example, rum and tequila are gross independently)
Brassica oleracea cultivars
Brussels sprouts[13][14][15] yuck. these taste worse than lettuce... but are easier to eat if I'm forced to
cabbage[13] pretty gross but tolerable in some circumstances, such as in gyoza
kale[15] what is that?
coffee[13] Everyone tells me it is an acquired taste... I have tried many times, but I can never acquire it. It tastes so bitter and gross. However, I love the smell of coffee
grapefruit juice[14] I have no problem with sour such as lemons, but I hate grapefruit juice. Don't like lime much either
green tea[14] I can drink this, but it doesn't really taste very good.
spinach[13] this is pretty foul also... probably as hard for me to eat as lettuce, but I don't come across it often
soy products[14] I've developed a taste for asian foods cooked with soy sauce. Interesting cause soy sauce itself doesn't taste good, but it flavors other things well
carbonation in drinks such as in soda, beer, etc.[16] soda doesn't taste right without it, but a lot of times I prefer non-carbonated beverages
Other foods may also show altered patterns of preference and consumption, but only indirect evidence exists:
chili peppers - capsaicin burn is more intense in supertasters I loooove spicy foods.
tonic water - quinine is more bitter to supertasters yuck
olives - for a given concentration, salt is more intense in supertasters black are ok, even on pizza. never really cared for green ones

There was a time in my life where picky eaters went hungry...or ate C-rations...(some of which weren't actually TOO bad)

I KNOW I ate things in Vietnam that I probably wouldn't have if I'd have known what it was...and other things that I'd probably not have eaten under "different circumstances," but, when you're hungry, and tired of "Meals, Combat, Individual," AND, you don't want to insult your hosts, many of whom perhaps couldn't really spare the food they were serving you, you ate what was offered...
