do ppi s really matter now?

at firat i saw a hd phone and was amazed how sharp the pictures (i.e. nearly 300ppi) then came along the full hd displays boastin 440,470 ppi the point is unless u cant spot a pixel in your phone it doesnt matter how dense the phone is pixelated i think a 350 ppi phone is enough to do the job and the resolution going beyond 1080p is just foolish and which would inturn have more cons than pro like more battery uasge ,more cpu usage e.t.c.so id rather have a bigger 1080p phones with lesser ppi than smaller 1080p phones with moe ppi , agree?

i think ~450 ppi is the sweet spot, no point going much above that due to power concerns like you mentioned. new display tech could change that though. bigger phones should obviously have higher resolution to maintain ~450 ppi.

I think it remains to be seen. I thought 720p would be plenty and 1080p would be overkill. Maybe in a couple years I'll be thinking I can't live without 1600p phones.

I think it matters.. for Chinese and possibly Arabic characters. There are examples online somewhere how they look at 300-ish PPI and 500+ PPI.

Agreed. 1080p is much nicer than 720p.

Beats me. To be honest I thought 800x480 or 854x480 in sub-4" format was pretty nice.

Now I have this Lumia 928 with 1280x768 (in 4.5") and whether it's Pentile or not it's higher resolution than my 35 year old eyes can make out.

When does it matter? The more you look at it? In that sense I'd rather us shoot for retina on monitors than on phones?

I feel like I stare at my computer screen all day long and it sucks. Throw on the fact that it's a craptastic TN panel, and my eyes are burning.

There's no argument for stagnation, even if it seems good as is! When I got my Samsung Galaxy S2, I thought it looked amazing. Then I got my Note, and I was blown away. Then I replaced the Note with my S4, and the screen is significantly nicer than the Note. I welcome the advancements that are sure to come!

But on a certain level I agree with you, obviously the current technologies would choke with much higher resolutions. But better battery, CPU and display tech will surely allow for higher resolution with great performance.

1080p isn't appropriate for all sizes. larger screens need higher res than 1080p.

450ppi is good since it takes both resolution and size into account.

Read the other day the minimum perceptible pixel pitch was 1.2 um. That's around 20.000 PPI

1080p is more than enough for phones. Honestly its more than enough for most tablets. I have the 8.9" kindle HD with a 1080p screen and its really sharp already. Phone makers are going to have to find something new to compete on. Maybe battery life finally?

I have a 4.7" screen phone @ 720p and I can still see the pixels. I'd love 1080 at this size.

Its funny to see people saying ~450ppi is now the sweet spot, when several months ago, they said that was overkill and that Apple's ~320ppi was perfect. There was no need for 1080p resolutions. Very amusing to see these trends.

To be fair, now the 1080p phones are actually in the hands of the people and the difference between them and the 720p ones are pretty clear.

The thing is, a 1080p pentile screen at about 4.8" is effectively ~320ppi for the blue and red pixels. Which is why the GS4 is very noticeably better than the GS3.

However, if you had an LCD at 300ppi LCD like the iPhone 4/5 or One X, then the difference is smaller.


I'd be perfectly happy with the One X's 720p if it had a 2 day battery with modern SoC's for instance but not with for the GS3.
