I went to eat at Applebees yesterday and the waiter made a request for a donation on behalf of Toys for Tots, and I contributed.

I'm not allowed to since I'm a selfish, greedy, uncompassionate, conservative bastard. And I contribute to the needy every two weeks at paycheck time.

Actually, we usually do the giving tree and toys for tots. We always pick a tag for a kid who's asking for clothes. Makes me sad that a kid has to ask for basic necessities for christmas, so we get the clothes or shoes or whatever, then get them a couple of toys also.

Very cool thread. We're doing a Giving Tree at the Cafe Allegro in the University District (in Seattle), if anyone wants to come by and donate a gift for people at the YWCA.

Check your local yellow pages, I'm sure there are many charities that could use your help on Christmas day.

It's probably better for you to keep any sort of donations private, but still encourage others to do good as well.

Give food, money, toys, time, whatever you can. It doesn't matter, just do something.

I personally donate to the USMC Toys for Tots program and have since I was in the 8th grade. I'm 33 now by the way.

My wife and I also donate to food banks and help feed the needy when we can.

Please...think of the people who haven't been as blessed as most of us here have been. Do something....it doesn't matter what...just give something back to the world.

Everyone list their favorite charities here and let's get ATOT to make a difference. Maybe the Mods can sticky this thread so it will be an easy place for everyone to get an idea about where they can go or what they can do to help.

Some of my favorite charities I donate to are:

Toys for Tots

The Salvation Army

Feed the Children

St. Jude Children's Research Hospital

Armed Forces Children's Education Fund

How come Children's Hospital needs donation? It's not like their doctors don't make six figures and make enough revenue they don't have the money to allocate for their own goods.

That's because their malpractice insurance costs 5 figures numbnuts.

sheesh

Great Thread....I usually give to a couple on your list plus a few of our local charities.

Homeless guy had his war metals on and had a cup on the corner. I personally don't think he is old enough for WWII (looks around 60-70) so I really doubt he served. Maybe he did in some other war. I don't really care about that though.

He had his head down and all the people walking past him outside the mall just kind of ignore him. So I went to the ATM and got out five 20s, rolled them up and dropped them in his cup.

Yeah he could spend it on booze. In fact, I think he -will- spend it on booze even. At least some of it. But I think if he even spends a quarter of it on food then thats okay. I give him the benefit of the doubt and leave the judging up to God (if there is one).

And no I'm not rich. I'm just a college kid but I figured I could go without pizza and beer during study week.

When you drop a toy in the toys for tots bin, it's possible that you are donating to the Salvation Army after all. It's rare that the Marines themselves would pass toys directly to someone in need. The Marines simply pass them to organizations like Salvation Army so they can distribute them.

I donate stuff I don't want/need anymore to the Salvation Army every year...funny how it always seems to total about $500.

I don't have money to donate. But I think I'll go volunteer at a shelter or the hospital again this year.

My work this year isn't doing the giving tree so I haven't decided exactly what I'm going to do. I'll tell you right now I won't have anything to do with the Salvation Army. My wife and I were just starting out, she was pregnant, and we didn't have a bed. Went to the local Salvation Army to see if they could sell us a mattress for what we had (like $20) so my pregnant wife wouldn't be sleeping on the floor, and they told us to "Go away and come back when you've got some money." :|:|:| I had just started a job, and it took well over a month to get caught up with rent and such so that I could go buy a mattress. Wanna guess where I didn't buy it? :|

That's really too bad that the SA in your area is like that-try not to hold a grudge against the whole organization, though. I do a lot of work for the Salvation Army in my area-the people there would NEVER do what yours did to you. I'm very sorry to hear that.
