sometimes there are food kitchens that need help , collecting the food , and cookin' ,they always need help with distribution and cleanin' up . you can shake a bell , salvation army , it's only a two hour gig , but here in the windy city, it gets kinda cold .you only have to stand there a while at 9 degrees and the bell bell makes noise all by it self, while you shivvver.

My family has always signed up for this thing where we buy another family (with children) gifts so the kids have something to open on christmas. You even get a list of what the kids like, their age/sex, etc. You never do meet them though. Makes someone happy and you don't have to spend that much.

I also do something else (that I picked up from my mom...she has done it for years). Every time I go through the Tim Horton's drive-thru to get a coffee in December, I pay for the person's coffee behind me and tell the drive-thru server to tell them Merry Christmas. It's only a buck or two and it could totally change someone's day. Yesterday I did it to some grumpy looking lady and she had a smile from ear to ear when she left (she pulled up beside me at the next lights).

I do my share.

Here's a good charity link someone just PM'd me.

Campbell's Chunky Soup has a site that will contribute a can of soup to local food banks for every person who visits the site. Just click on the helmet of your favorite NFL team, and a can of soup will go to a food bank in the area surrounding that team. The link is here

It literally only takes 15 seconds to participate and doesn't require any personal info, forms etc.

I went with the Jets cause I figured they wouldn't get as many votes, I was right. They only have 32,000. while Green Bay has 411,000.

But anyway, thanks for pointing it out or I wouldn't have known anything about it.

Happy Holidays! :gift:

My family has adopted a needy single mother and child to provide gifts and food for.

Personally I believe it's out responsibility as wealthy members of society to provide for those less fortunate.

Hell I only make 65 but that's more than most 3rd world villages will see in a generation. My income could potentially provide an ENTIRE FRICKING COMMUNITY with an above average existance. Makes you think....

Mrsskoorb and I went to discovery store on saturday and picked up a $20 bubble making kit and that $50 radio control car that does all the crazy stuns (saw it on TV). We're sending it to some kid (he's 7)'s mother (to pass on to him) who absolutely will not expect to receive this at all. I hope he likes it. I want one

Alot of ya may disagree. I don't know why. But since Microsoft shot down my community service idea, I've made a decision to do this once a year for as long as I can:

Buy a case of cheap alcohol and distribute it around to the Bums. At least once a year they can have something to warm them up a little.

Contrary to popular belief, a little Alcohol is NOT bad for someone who has nothing left, can't get a job because no one will hire them and just hopes to make it through the winter. If you think it is bad for them, let me hear your reasons why? Just name one!

Man you really do that? A good reason not to is because a drunk bum is ESPECIALLY unlikely to get his ass off the street. Also, you'd be surprised how much money the average bum can make. Enough to buy all the fast food and cheap liqour they want, so they can have a fully belly and a drunk head in whichever alley they happen to live in.

I think your efforts would be more beneficial if you sent money to an agency, or heck even sponsored a kid in another country year round.

Its true, it would be more beneficial to sponser a kid in another country year round, but I'm not doing this year round. Just once a year. Doesn't cost me much. Also, I see alot of bums digging through trashcans looking for food. I don't think they'd do that if they had money to buy it. And I think most of them are not going to get their asses off the streets since not many people will be willing to pick them up. I wouldn't hire one so I don't expect anyone else to either. But they at least deserve a little something to warm them up during this time of year. I think a little Alcohol works in that area.

I might donate my old clothes. They are pretty new, since I went from 40-42 to 36 very fast on Atkins. Then again if they are poor, they shouldn't be size 40 anyways

We have an adopt a family program every year and we always pick a bunch of tags and buy whatever it is that they wanted. I also found it fun this year to volunteer to help out the toys for tots program. It was really rewarding to see parents come in (some with tears of joy in their eyes) to pick up gifts for their children.

I volunteered at Toys for Tots in my town Thursday. It was part of my English class. At first I thought it was gonna suck but after I did it I actually enjoyed it, it made me feel like I made a difference; made me realize just how fortunate I am and how selfish I can be sometimes.

I know Christmas is about the kids but let's also not forget the elderly. My mother just found out about a retired lady that kept coming to the library for the old newspapers. Turns out she was burning them to heat her mobile home (in a woodburning stove) after the heater broke. I called up a friend, and he and I went and cut up some of the downed trees around my property for her to use instead.

I am doing so as we speak. My GF works with a single mother of 2 who has no money whatsoever and her 14 year old is having trouble doing her school work because she does not have a computer and the internet and alot of the work requires such access. I just built my GF a new computer earlier and I am working or sprucing her old one up and getting it ready for the young girl on Christmas morning. I sent my digital camera with the GF earlier to give to her friend to take some personal pictures so I can personalize the desktop as an extra surprise.

This young girl has never had a real Christmas in her whole life and I hope I can help remedy that. My mother usually sponsors at least one Angel a year sometimes more so this year she decided to help my brighten this girl's Christmas so she contributed a brand new printer for the system. I did my homework and bought her a Canon so I could show the mother how to get really cheap refills to help her keep costs down. This printer will be the first new thing she has been given in a very long time and I feel really good about this whole deal.

Time to get back to work......Merry X-mas all!

My mom is having some major financial difficulties this year (divorced with a dead beat ex and 4 kids still at home).

She basically told all my brothers and sisters that there won't be a gift-giving christmas this year, that it will be just a day where the whole family will be together to watch movies and play games. She doesn't know this but Santa Beau is coming christmas eve

Booze is the reason a lot of them are there. That's like giving a crack addict crack to cheer them up because they're such a deadbeat. And yes, a lot of these bums do go through cans for food if they have the money and it's a choice between food and liqour. They can't find liqour in a trash can, so they buy that, and eat cold chips. It's pathetic, but giving them booze won't help them.

Well, actually Skoorb I think in a lot of instances the alcohol is a symptom of the situation rather than the cause.....but as always I could be wrong.

My family did the Angel tree, but I also drove in the snow up to Kentucky to pick up my cousin for Christmas. I don't think he had the money for a bus ticket and he wouldn't have been able to bring his stuff home(transferring). They don't have much money, so I bought him dinner as well and my mother is paying for half of his tuition next year because he can't afford it all with a job.

I need to donate to the Food World Food bank as well.

He had his head down and all the people walking past him outside the mall just kind of ignore him. So I went to the ATM and got out five 20s, rolled them up and dropped them in his cup.

Yeah he could spend it on booze. In fact, I think he -will- spend it on booze even. At least some of it. But I think if he even spends a quarter of it on food then thats okay. I give him the benefit of the doubt and leave the judging up to God (if there is one).

And no I'm not rich. I'm just a college kid but I figured I could go without pizza and beer during study week.

Could have been Korea.
Or Nam.

I think instead of focusing our compassion on the impoverished this Christmas, we should focus our compassion inward and feed our Selves. That would be more in line with the actual meaning of Christmas and would help society a lot more.

If one gives to others in the true spirit of giving it does feed one's inner self at the same time benefitting someone else also......I'll stay with the giving to others option as it seems to have a bigger payout.
