GTX285 was benched in DX10, while cypress & fermi were benched in DX11. Seems like the higher the DirectX, the larger the performance hit.

I really hope the more reputable review sites make it extremely clear which DX versions are being used on presented benchmarks.

Speaking of Metro2033, since you own the game can you say which has a more noticeable impact on image quality: DOF or tessellation?
Neither really, unless you look for it. I guess you could say tesselation because it's right in your face (gun models, character models), and it does look nifty in screenshots. I tried Advanced DoF and took comparison screenshots with it off and on at different points of the game and I really couldn't see much of difference. Maybe I didn't test the right areas or something. As it is, Advanced DoF is completely broken at 2560x1600, so I wouldn't be able to use it until it's fixed anyway.

It says it right on the chart.

143 watts greater power consumption for Fermi. Yeah, that is a lot.

That is a hell of a lot... Either the 250 TDP is exactly what it uses in games and ATI drastically over estimates it... or, well you know.. 188+143 is not 250 .

Oh well, if the high end of the performance gap is what we see in other reviews it might be worth it.

We're starting to see preorder prices for the GTX 470/480 at $345/$485 respectively. If these numbers hold up, and there is good OC potential, ATI is going to have to adjust prices.

No way I understand Fermi is a disappointment but No need for AMD to raise pricies. The power usage factored in this thing is a turd

I was willing to live with 250w load, and up to 30w more than 5870 idle. "480 consumes 130 watts more at load, 45 watts more at idle than 5870, fan runs at 72% temps 90-96C load" WTF?? If this proves accurate, forget it.

There was a time when I didn't give a crap about power consumption. But times are changing. I'm glad I waited. If official reviews peg 480 as that much of a hog, I can't commit, not when 5870 is there in it's proven, balanced state.

Sorry for venting, it's just frustrating thinking I may have waited for a dissapointment. Bring the reviews..

Doesn't look impressive at all. Nvidia will regain the Performance Crown, but other factors(Power Consumption/Heat) are going to turn a lot of people away from considering Fermi.

ATI/AMD will have no problem regaining the Performance Crown, if they want it.

Seems like you are going to want ~850w power supply for SLI. Not surprising at all to me.

People were buying 1K PSUs to run 2 280s and I told them they were crazy.

If Fermi uses 143 more watts at load, then how will noise factor in?

Will two smaller cards be quieter and faster? (I believe HD5970 has the same problem when compared to HD5870s in Xfire. Two small fans running slow are quieter than one HD5970 fan running faster right?)

I agree. I'm not convinced how well it overclocks is going to be a deciding factor for the majority though (well not for me anyway as I don't know how and wouldn't feel comfortable tampering with such expensive equipment anyhow). I don't even see the point until these cards start showing their age / can't keep up with the latest games.

Anyway, I had my eye set on this: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product...82E16814102872

Now that I've seen the benches and the GTX 480 is equal at worst and significantly faster in a few other key titles (even barring the PhysX ones), that Vapor-X looks a lot less appealing.

Sure it would run cooler and draw less power, but does that really matter? With these cards priced about equally, how is the Fermi not a more reasonable choice? I mean, I'm not really looking to save the world's resources or a few pennies on the utility bill.

This power consumption thing seems to be blown out of proportion by many. Has there been any records of power hungry cards melting cases or something?

Hey no prob, I've been waiting for them as well. One last one before it gets taken down (system power consumption):

Something about that chart doesn't make sense to me. One GTX 480 draws an extra 140 watts OVER a 5870, but adding another GTX 480 for SLI only adds an extra 120 watts on top of that? I'm not that familiar with SLI power consumption... is this typical? I would expect with the ~250 watt TDP adding another card would draw more than an extra 120 watts.

yeah, I quickly browsed on the HExus review that they recommend a 1200W psu for SLI....imagine a full blown core i7 system with a few harddrives and then you can expect your electricity bill and heat to sky rocket...

On a another note: hexus review site is currently down for maintenance
