Will Smith and Adam Sandler must have been included as a joke.

I wouldn't call DiCaprio up and coming...he's already on the top tier list imo.

Yeah, DiCaprio is a perfect illustration of how an actor can go from a teenybopper idol (in Titanic) to a leading man that everyone takes seriously.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt is another one who is younger but I'd say he's also already made the transition.

Predicting the next one can be hard. For every DiCaprio there are a hundred others who never take the next step.

Maybe Dane DeHaan for a younger guy? He was really good in the two things I have seen him in, plus he looks like DiCaprio, so he's got that going for him, which is nice.

Thankfully for DiCaprio, he's darling to Martin Scorsese. As opposed to Depp who's Tim Burton's property.

The list of directors Leo has worked with is actually pretty impressive. Best Director Oscar winners Scorsese, Boyle, Spielberg, Eastwood, Mendes and Cameron. Also was in films directed by Christopher Nolan and Sam Raimi and is about to be the villain in a Tarantino movie.

I know, I'm just saying he has something of a partnership with Scorsese, just as Depp clearly has one with Burton. DiCaprio has sort of taken over the reigns for Robert DeNiro in that regard.

However, I would say that a partnership with Scorsese tends to offer one more acting..."credibility"?...than one with Burton, simply because of their usual styles/subject matter.

He was also good in Alpha Dog and The Social Network, imo.

Speaking of which, I also think Emile Hirsch, and Amanda Seyfried are names that will be around for a long while. Possibly Anton Yelchin if he picks the right roles.

Mila Kunis (Black Swan)
Natalie Portman (Horrible SW performances offset by numerous other awesome performances. Though she was talented ever since seeing Leon the Professional)
Emma Watson
Eddie Redmayne (Decent actor but been in a lot of B movies)
Tom Hardy (Not too old at 35, played Bane in Batman The Dark Knight Rises)

DiCaprio did at least have a couple of good roles prior to Titanic in What's Eating Gilbert Grape? and The Basketball Diaries.

another young actress that I haven't seen mentioned:
Chloë Moretz

The OP just mentioned actors, but actors are still playing leading men into their 60s. While leading roles for actresses dry up at about 40.

All my favorite actresses when I was a kid are now playing grandmothers or mothers if they are lucky.

So another vote for Chloe Moretz. Elle Fanning is also good, and prettier than her older sister. Hailee Steinfeld, who was so great in True Grit. AnnaSophia Robb is also very pretty and really good. Sophie Turner is really great on Game of Thrones. I think Kiernan Shipka on Mad Men will be popular when she's older.

How about Karl Urban?

I didn't realize he played Vaako in Chronicles of Riddick (and apparently they're making another Riddick movie...)

I think you're starting to see the effects of some societal trends that started in the 60's really take hold, and this lack of good up and coming, believable in action movie... male stars is definitely part of it.

See the problem is, most sort of manly man types who can be convincing as a character that is shown being generally competent and powerful, strong and confident... well, the type of guys who can convincingly portray that can do so because at least to some degree, they ARE that in their real life.

But what percentage of guys who are like that, are also pursuing acting careers? Acting isn't generally something those types of guys gravitate toward. This problem only gets worse as young boys have fewer such actors to idolize and want to emulate. Some of the action stars who are just now ending their viable life cycle probably looked up to people like John Wayne, Sean Connery, Steve McQueen, Clint Eastwood etc etc as they were growing up, and this in turn inspired them to become actors.

So all the following have to happen to get such an actor:

1.) You have to have a child raised to embrace the masculine (happening less and less)
2.) You have to have that child see masculine actors to idolize in movies as he grows up (happening less and less)
3.) You have to have that person actually go through with the desire to pursue acting (small percentage)
4.) You have to have them actually be able to get to a point of being a decent actor, and able to learn how to do that. (Most can't)
5.) Lots of luck has to happen too, the right role for their career to take off... etc

The pickings are slim and will get slimmer.

That's part of why they keep using Cruise, Willis, even Schwarzenegger. Because the younger generations just aren't providing those sorts of men to replace them. It's also why more and more actors are being brought from Australia, or other countries that haven't been QUITE as hard hit by these same societal trends... and being asked to play these characters with an American accent, etc.

Thanks a lot feminism!
