Do we need harsher punishment for violent criminals in the US?

In the other thread, we have people saying a 15 year old should be let off easier because he's young and didn't know better.
In an OT thread, there were those who got outraged at the person who fired a crossbow at someone who threw a rock at a moving vehicle.

In both instances, I felt the punishment fit the crime, as did many others, but it's shocking to hear others chime in saying the criminal should have been dealt with in less harsh ways.

But that's just the problem with our society today. The current system is not enough of a deterrent for would be criminals. The risks and consequences for committing a crime mean nothing to criminals.
Incarceration is doing nothing for them, except hardening them.
Look at the recent riots in the UK, and our flash robbers. They just did not think they would get caught, or that nothing would happen to them if they did because everyone else was doing it.

In Iran, they would've had their arms cut off. Rapists would've had their dicks chopped off. In Singapore, they would've been caned.

Personally, I think both of those methods is far more effective than our judicial/criminal system and would gladly welcome it.
To me, it's quite simple. Don't want to be shot, maimed, have limbs amputated? Don't commit a fucking crime. Don't give me this BS where people don't know wrong from right. Once they see the consequences of committing a crime, they will think real hard about whether it's worth it or not.

If this is too inhumane for you bleeding heart liberals, how about banishing all violent criminals to an uninhabited island where they can never leave, but have full freedom on the island.
they can choose to live together in harmony as a functioning society, or kill each other off.

I fail to see why we need to start increasing penalties at this time, let alone taking on draconian punishments as the OP suggests. Crime has gone down in this country 16 of the last 18 years and is on trend to hit 1960 levels in 5 years time. Furthermore, In Europe violent crime is punished not half of what it is here, and in most European countries the rate of violent crime is lower than here. This is the 21st century. I don't want to return to the dark ages, or sharia law.

So your not happy with having the largest prison population per capita in the world? What % of the population being in jail would you be happy with? 50%? 75%? 90%? Should we even bother jailing them or should we just exterminate these useless mouth breathers?

Republican's love it(Dollar signs in their eyes) especially in my State where Walker is pushing legislation to privatize the prisons.

that's exactly what i don't want. my tax money going to sustaining these fools in jail.
cane them and release.

ideally, i'd banish them all to an island and let them fend for themselves.

What Island, Who pays for the island? Who makes sure they don't leave the island? What determines who goes to the island?

For some things yes. rape and child molestation equals castration, a beat down, then prison for a long long time.

Other things no. Selling a little pot illegally... fine you and GTFO of the court room.

Fewer jail sentences, lower times overall, more executions for those with greater than 10 years. In other words, clear out the prisons.

Find an unoccupied island. Even if we have to pay, it'll cost less than maintaining all the prisons we have now.

Monitor via satelite.
If they can get off, more power to them.

Those found guilty by jury of committing a violent crime.

OP is so disgusted by violence, that he wants to inflict,... more violence.

How about you just open up and gladiator arena type prison? Each day, on the hour, prisoners are forced to fight each other to the death. You can then sit back and watch human beings murder and kill one another.

Obviously, rehabilitation of criminals does not work at all - right? No one has truely paid their debt to society. So, you figured you might as well kill & harm all of them.

Also - how low is the crime rate in the countries where they do kill and maime the criminal? It's zero, right?

And then in a couple of decades they will turn into Australians.

It's a good thing Repugs are horrified of Islamic Jihadists or they would be importing them to run the Justice and Prison Systems.

We should punish criminals by suffocating them to near-death with love.

On second thought, I think this should be done once an hour, on the hour, for 90 years. Except during sleeping hours, in which case, it should happen only once every 3 hours. (Only to violent criminals)

Nothing will cease to more entertaining then rightwingers claiming that if only we were more like Iran or China our country would improve.

It depends on the crime.

- At least some drugs should be decriminalized. Legalize, tax for revenue, save on enforcement costs, de-fund the drug dealers and cartels.

- DUI consequences (and DUI does include the drugs above) should be harsher. People get multiple DUIs but keep driving until they finally kill someone.

- Assault and robbery seems about right, at least in the states with three strikes laws to put away career criminals for life.

Just hand the criminals a set amount of money each month. This should deter them from robbing others to get more money. Call up the local police department, admit to being a thug and get on the payroll.

I think what we have now is very ineffective and wasteful.
A much better system would involve MUCH shorter "time" but would instead involve Corporal punishment. Nothing permanently debilitating though.

When somebody gets busted for stealing or whatever, beat them with a stick a few times, and tell them don't fvckin steal. Don't just lock them up in a cage with a bunch of other criminals so that they can all learn from each other to be better criminals.

It's about right at the moment except we should take a different approach to drugs and stop the lord of the flies atmosphere in prison. If it's true the way people are raped and just generally mistreated in prison is barbaric. If anything, that's just going to make them worse when they get out.

Furthermore, In Europe violent crime is punished not half of what it is here, and in most European countries the rate of violent crime is lower than here.

I don't think that fact is as informative as you think it might be. Singapore has harsh punishments and is a very safe country. Europe has a lot more petty crime in my experience and in any case they have more social programs and less diversity so I'm not sure you can compare the two.

Just drop them off next to a river or lake in Alaska with a coat and a buck knife.

. . . then use hidden cameras to show the bumfights and cannibalarity that ensues on pay per view.

If too many survive, send in the hunters.

Promise the running man that survives a pardon and fabulous prizes.
