Question Do we really need the advertised specs for a PSU?

About a year ago I updated my setup. 9700k, 16GB, M2 SSD, 1TB SSD, Corsair RM450W PSU, new case (I had a GTX 1060 already.)

The other night I splurged. Gigabyte RTX 3070, Corsair RM750W PSU, 2 32" 2k 165hz curved monitors (Gigabyte, they look absolutely unbelievable.)

I was lazy. I just wanted to try the new video card with the monitors. PSU routing in the case isn't fun. My 3lb CPU cooler is in the way of the 8pin motherboard plug. I dont have any Arctic Silver. I may be able to take off the rear and top fan and fit my fat hand in.

So I tried it with the 450W PSU. My numbers I crunched in my head said it should work. There's enough juice on the 12V rail to power it and the 95W TDP CPU (although its overclocked.)

Did it?

I played COD all night, no hiccups.

Furmark is attached. Board pulling 270W (I thought the TDP was 225 on a 3070 or because its aftermarket it has a higher TDP?)

3DMark2022 test next. CPU and GPU stress test at the same time may crash it. Maybe not.

Looks like the stock 3070 pulls 250W peak, but if you have the gigabyte OC as your 1815MHz boost clock indicates it might be 300W

Your PSU is rated for 37.5A on the 12V rail, equaling 450W. Corsair probably under rated the PSU, since it is capable of handling 450W on its 12V rail alone. Your PSU can probably handle more than 450W.

Tomshardwares cpu only figures showing 200W stock

A PC with 9700k can use quite a lot of power when fully loaded.
A rough theoretical max would be ~230+300=530W at default settings.
If anything is overclocked it could run higher.

Many high quality PSUs are capable of running at over 100% rated load. You might not notice any problems with your RM450, though for your setup a 620W or higher PSU would be typical.
The newer graphics cards and CPUs tend to require a lot of power at peak load.

You can also drive a Toyota Corolla at 110MPH, but I wouldn't want to do it all day long.

Generic PSU wattage ratings for video cards, try to assume a merely average PSU that only has to met its rating. Better PSU can meet their rating through the entire lifecycle, and exceed them till nearer the end of a longer lifecycle.

Getting a higher wattage, HQ PSU for a $500+ video card was a good idea.
