The solution is simple, never live anywhere that has carpool lanes and you don't have a problem.

And the best part is that you can buy a 4 bedroom, 2 1/2 bath house out there for $105,000 and you're even allowed to raise goats in your yard. You have a Dollar General right there in town and there's a Walmart just 8 miles up the road beside the movieplex. They're even building a Costco only 90 minutes away. Which means you have something to do every weekend - load up Ma and Pa and the six kids and go to Costco and stock up.

Excitement galore.

I drive every day and I really like the fact we don't have car pool lanes where I live. I drive alone and I would be very annoyed If I couldn't overtake slower cars just because we are all in full lanes and car pool lane is almost empty.

Funny story, I knew a guy who had a female mannequin that he would dress up to use as a passenger for carpool lane use. He wasn't weird with it (i.e. it wasn't a substitute girlfriend), but if he didn't have anyone to road-trip with, he'd set her up in the passenger seat & cruise in the HOV lane all the way to his destination.

I've seen cops sit in the HOV lane shoulder far ahead with binoculars looking back so it seems like this ploy may not work since they get a good look. I'm sure the punishment would be severe too so I'm not sure it's worth the attempt.

My story - my wife was pregnant with strict bed rest and she had to lay in the back seat. I was very nervous driving her in the HOV lane for her appointment and so I had her stick a foot up toward the window. Not sure what good that did but I didn't get pulled over.

I'd be curious to know if there are any states that have actually passed laws making it a special violation. My bet is that you get the exact same ticket as someone caught driving alone.

as opposed to what?

people always say this type of thing about suburban and rural areas, but never actually say why this is bad compared to the urban utopia in which they currently abide.

I have a plug-in Prius. I also have a special green plate because of that. The large highways around here allow me to drive on them in the HOV lanes regardless of how many people are in my car.

I'll take it, but I must admit it can lead to some unintended situations. I have a buddy who drives a supercar, but it's a plug-in hybrid. Because his BMW i8 qualifies he got the green plates and thus uses the provincial HOV lanes with impunity.

Similarly, somebody I met recently has been asking me about plug-in hybrids not so much because he wants one but because he wants to use the HOV lanes. But I guess that was the point of providing this incentive in the first place.

Pretty much. Places that have carpool lanes by nature probably have a ridiculous amount of people and traffic. Screw that noise.

Heck I find the traffic even here gets a little nutty, I avoid driving if I can at certain times. If I did not have to work I'd gladly live in a rural area, even if it only has a "general store" lol. My actual dream is a lake front cottage that is livable all year round. Idealy less than an hour from town though, don't want to be TOO isolated.

Either way it's still nice to see stars and stuff here at night. Crazy to think some people don't even get to see that.

Regarding living away from HOV lanes: Actually I rarely use those provincial HOV lanes even though I could anytime I want with those green plates.

Why? Because I live right in the city, and work in the city. There are no provincial HOV lanes along my commute.

The only time I use them is when I go out of town to the distant 'burbs.

There are reasons populated places are popular. Reasons which keep people there.

In LA the carpool lanes are carpool 24/7 and I would rarely drive in them alone. Now that I'm in the Bay Area, they are only carpool during certain times of the day and they so far seem hardly looked at by cops so yes I use them everyday because you Bay Area drivers suck.

I was surprised how narrow roads are up in N.cal. as many cars as here in socal too. shucks
