Do you bag your own groceries?

If you go to a manned lane that doesn't have a bagger and the store is fairly busy - would you spend some time bagging your own groceries*? Or do you just stand there and wait for the cashier to do it after she done scanning everything (and hold up everyone in line after you)?

*I'm not necessarily saying all of them. I get there are times you want to make sure everything rings up correctly and needing to pay. But once thats done or if there are two of you etc

They don't bag them for you here. And I prefer it that way, I want as few people as possible touching my groceries. The more of them touching it, the higher the chance that one of them didn't wash their hands after a toilet visit.

I bag my own groceries at the self checkout. I'll do it too sometimes when ringing up more if there is space and it's set up to do that. I grew up bagging groceries from 14-23 years old and it amazes me how many people struggle to bag groceries correctly. I'm an expert at it and it's like riding a bike - comes back to me instantly. With the paper bags it's basically like 3d Tetris and there's an art to it.

If it's just me shopping, I watch the item prices as they scan it so I don't bag. But last time we went as a family just because we were already out and me and the boys did all the bagging, no problem.

Whatever's fastest. If the bagger/assistant is already handling it, I let them do their thing. If they're overwhelmed, yes I'll do it. I have a greater interest in getting away from people than 'not doing work'.

Yes, I prefer to bag them, always. Only savages wait for the cashier or someone else to show up and bag their groceries. I think all states and counties should have the same policy: ain't no one bagging your stupid groceries for you.

I wonder if there's regional variation here. I'm perfectly happy to bag my own groceries, but in the places I've lived (deep South, US), it's really only an option in self-checkout lanes. The other lanes aren't really set up for it.

This concept is foreign to me. The grocery stores I shop at ("Wegman's" mostly) don't allow you to bag your own stuff. The cashier bags them as he/she scans them. The bags are built into the belt thing immediately after the scanner, so the cashier scans the item then drops (places) it into a bag, then when the bag is full, they put it in your cart, or on the tablet behind them if you don't have a cart. There is literally no opportunity for you to bag your own stuff unless you want to be all up in their crotch area. Unless you're talking about self checkout, then of course I bag my own stuff.

I think I recall when I lived in a backwater town when I was young, we had a Kroger and they used to just slide the your stuff into a metal area after they scanned them, then a bagger would bag them. I don't recall there ever not being a bagger there, or if my mom just bagged them at that point. I figured that was a relic of the past, though, as I haven't seen a bagger in a store since the early 1990's.

If there's a teenager there ready to go, then fine. If not, then hell yes, I'll bag my own stuff. Its super easy, and gets you out and on your way so much faster. I've had several cashiers thank me for doing it. Saves time and keeps the line moving.

People who stand there and make the cashier do all of it are rude and lazy, if you ask me.

Maybe I'm the bagger. Just maybe you're cutting in on my turf, trying to deprive me of my livelihood. Every action carries karma Mr. Exterous.

I don't bag my own groceries unless I'm in the self checkout, and I rarely use self checkout. If they want me to bag or scan my own groceries they can give me a smock and put me on payroll.

It's never an issue at either grocery I go to. One has dedicated baggers. The other scans and bags at once, like Nashemon mention above.

In my area, MN, most of the stores do not provide ant option about bagging. It is DIY and that includes the handicapped.

I don't bag. Everything goes in the cart loose, then into the truck. At Aldi, I use a box at the counter. I have string bags I used to use at the grocery store when they still had back conveyors, but they got rid of the conveyors, and string bags are tricky to deal with for someone unaccustomed, so I don't bother anymore.

Yeah, if there isn't a bagger I'll bag. Takes me back to my first job in high school.

This is pretty much me. Having spent about a decade bagging groceries, I feel uncomfortable watching someone else do it. I'm silently critiquing them and will then often rearrange the items in the bag when they're done.

Of course. I always bag when there isn't a bagger present.
That's how it is for me. There is a bagger about 80% of the time but if there is not one, I will bag them as the cashier scans the merchandise.

But it seems a lot of people would rather just stand there and watch the cashier scan all the groceries and then watch the cashier bag all of their groceries.
