I believe I'll have another beer.

Is that ancient, or recent?

Do you believe in magic in a young girl's heart
How the music can free her, whenever it starts
And it's magic, if the music is groovy
It makes you feel happy like an old-time movie
I'll tell you about the magic, and it'll free your soul
But it's like trying to tell a stranger 'bout rock and roll

If you believe in magic don't bother to choose
If it's jug band music or rhythm and blues
Just go and listen it'll start with a smile
It won't wipe off your face no matter how hard you try
Your feet start tapping and you can't seem to find
How you got there, so just blow your mind

If you believe in magic, come along with me
We'll dance until morning 'til there's just you and me
And maybe, if the music is right
I'll meet you tomorrow, sort of late at night
And we'll go dancing, baby, then you'll see
How the magic's in the music and the music's in me

Yeah, do you believe in magic
Yeah, believe in the magic of a young girl's soul
Believe in the magic of rock and roll
Believe in the magic that can set you free
Ohh, talking 'bout magic

Agnostic here. There could be a god, but frankly I don't care enough to try to figure it out; I don't think any of the religions that I know of (which includes all mainstream and some offbeat ones too) quite manage to "get it right".

you may want to define aincent and recent. I think of an aincent faith as the kind of thing from roman or egyptian mythology. But then, judaism(sp?) is something like 5000 years old and is still practiced today.

BTW, I'm an agnostic. (and we're winning, w00t!!!)

Well I'm not sure how to vote, because I've Recently begun to suspect that I may be the Ancient One.

I used to be an athiest, but then I met the most perfect girl on the planet and I'm quite sure only a super-powerful being could have created such a beautiful person...

Only Satan could be so conniving. You'll agree when she breaks your heart.

I disagree. It appears that religions are a necessary part of more primitive societies. It keeps the individuals in such a society together and takes care of any moral and ethical issues.
Once a society grows and becomes more advanced, religions are no longer needed and in fact hinder any progress.

With that said, it's not hard to see how far societies in the Western countries have progressed. Many individuals still cling to religions, yet all religions are rapidly losing ground. We're on the verge of a change in the way people think about and observe their surroundings. Our curiosity and ingenuity will lead to discoveries we can't yet even imagine.

Define "primitive" and "progress". Analyze the source of this thought to realize that your logic is relative.

As for the question, what is belief?

Cheers !

I'm an existentialist. I believe in man's control over his own fate and his absolute responsibility for his actions.

I already went over this reasoning countless times.
Logic is linked to the amount of knowledge an individual possesses at a certain moment and is therefore relative, so far you're correct. Yet even with logic being relative, it's still the best way to reach a conclusion. You can't just act on instinct.

The definition of a 'primitive' society has already been defined quite accurately by other individuals. You should try checking the dictionary, I found that the dictionary I use (Oxford Dictionary, Tenth Edition) offers an accurate description of a primitive society.
As for the exact meaning of progress, you should think of mostly advancement in mental abilities, the way people think and interact with their surroundings. Societies which end up fighting each other for each little difference in opinions can hardly be called 'advanced'.
Ancient civilizations like the old Egyptians, the Maya etc. may appear to have been quite civilized at first sight, yet the knowledge and skills they had aquired were used for their religious beliefs and war. The Maya even sacrificed people because they thought that that would get them into favor with the gods.

<< As for the question, what is belief? >>

It's a common name for blind faith.
