Dunno. I've seen it done at a fair, but for all I know the hypnotist had a deal with the "random audience member."

Just looked in the phone book and saw that my area has 1 hypnotherapist. Gonna call 'em tomorrow. If they sound professional and charge less than $60 for a visit, I think I'll try it. I'm a little paranoid about them hypnotizing me into giving them all my money so maybe I'll ask if I can tape record the whole thing.

Anyway.

Hypnosis is an altered state of consciousness where you're more open to suggestion. However you're still perfectly conscious of what you say and what you do, unless you accept not to be.
You can not be hypnotized if you don't want to. It's said that 9 out of 10 people can be hypnotized, but the truth is the tenth person is either afraid of being hypnotized or simply doesn't want to, which leads to not being hypnotizable (that's not a word, is it?) If you convince a person that they want to be, once they believe it, they can be.
If you're under hypnosis, you can tell the hypnotist that you don't want to do something and he can't make you do it. You can also lie under hypnosis. And that's what people are mostly afraid of. They're afraid the hypnotist will ask them a question and they won't be able to lie about it.

My dad is a hypnotherapist (meaning he helps people get rid of their problems via hypnosis) and he's told me about and showed me some impressive things that can be achieved through it.
One of which was (women, pay attention) painless childbirth. He would tell the woman she had a glove with anaesthetic and wherever she would touch herself, she would feel no pain.
Another time, he had someone lay down on three chairs, one beneath the head, one under his feet and one in the middle, and once under hypnosis, he would remove the middle chair and the person would stay stiff.

Seen that before. It is cool.
