Do you care at all that the PS3 will also play Blu-Ray movies?

I don't believe that the Blu-Ray player feature of the PS3 is actually driving anyone to buy the PS3. Is it helping you justify buying one, or for those of you that aren't buying it, do you care that it has that function?

EDIT: WOW! Right now, 13 of 15 respondants don't even plan on getting a PS3. Didn't see that coming.

EDIT 2: Man... I definitely didn't think that with almost 150 votes in we'd have over 80% of people on this board saying they wouldn't buy one.

I haven't decided yet whether I'll actually buy one, but being a Blu-Ray player is definitely a plus in my eyes...

Ummm yeah I care quite a bit. If the POS is going to launch at $600.00+ it better damn well play Blu-Ray + HD-DVD, MP3 CD's, Karaoke CD+G's and anything else I decide to put in there short of a PC operating system (Linux not withstanding)!!!

Furthermore it had better damn well have HDMI output and support true 1080p just because....

Any questions?

I own a total of 5-10 DVDs. I doubt it will be any different for Blu-Ray discs so meh.

I'm not planning on getting one at the moment, but it would be nice to have. I think Blu-Ray should be the better format, because it has much more room to continue expanding, but you know how marketing works.

I would agree that it's a "plus," but on a $500 - $600 piece of equipment, it just seems silly. I wouldn't pay $100 for a Blu Ray player right now, so why would it impact my decision to pay WAY TOO MUCH for a game console anyway? That's my thinking, but didn't want to put it in the first post.

I care only in the sense that it is making the PS3 more expensive than it should be for almost no tangible benefit in gameplay.

Here's the way it is, as told by ME.

1. HDTV comes out, and it is good
2. HDTV cable/satellite channels flourish and it is good
3. In an effort to complicate RECORDING and REPLAYING said HDTV content, manufacturers f1ck it all up
4. BluRay comes out...HD DVD comes out. Nobody supports both, consumers get screwed over
5. HDTV DIES.

And that's how it's gonna go. They should've left Progressive Scan DVDs alone.

I don't even have an HDTV yet. So, by the time I have an HDTV, maybe the PS3 will be priced reasonably. Either way, I don't play on buying a PS3.

Well, I don't plan on getting one, primarily because the blueray drive which I don't care about is inflating the price so much. If they left it out and just used normal dvd drive which lowered the price, I might get one. So I'm guessing that falls into the last option, so thats how I voted.

By the time I get a PS3, there will be one HD DVD format or they'll both have failed miserably. In other words, the absolute earliest I'll get a PS3 is when it hits $400.

As someone with plenty of expendable income, it was hard enough justifying $500+ for a 360 (with games and taxes), nevermind an amount of money that makes that look downright small.

Does your friend know that only about 10% of American households have an HDTV? That number will increase in the future, but I personally don't expect to own an HDTV in the next 3-5 years.

So no, the BluRay drive in the PS3 would not matter to me at all.

I don't plan to buy a PS3 but will buy a Wii and I'll eventually get a 360 when the prices are lower.

Wont be buying one. Sony is out of their minds, and I'm not going to support their crazyness.

I'm purposely NOT buying one BECAUSE it has Blu-Ray. If I was going to pay enough for a home theatre setup that I was going to get Blu-Ray and HDMI and all that jazz, I sure as hell wouldn't make a video came console my choice as a player. Seriously.

Sony is evil so I don't plan on buying a PS3. Same reason why I couldn't care less about Blu-ray.

I think your poll results may be skewed by this fact - many gamers were turned off by the $600 price tag. Home theater afficionados on the other hand are excited about the $600 price tag, because that is actually cheap for a BluRay player. So... it's not necessarily gamers who will be voting for the first option in your poll, it may be people who don't even plan to use it to play games.

Don't plan on buying a PS3.

Once "Blu-ray" players are around $100 or less, and once blu-ray media is the standard and there is no price premium over DVDs .... then I'll consider it.

Personally, I think DVD is here to stay. I don't see Blu-Ray being successful as a successor to DVD. Perhaps in another 5 or 10 years a higher resolution video format will become the norm, but in general, for most people. VHS quality was "good enough" and DVD is "great."

I'll stick with my PC for games and my DVD player for movies.

I know the XBOX is pretty crappy as a DVD player. I could be mistaken, but I think it's the same way with the PS2.

If that's the case I'm not going to invest in the PS3 and have to settle for a crappy blu-ray player.

In all fairness, Blu Ray isn't ONLY about having HD output. It also offers more room for more extra features, though admittedly, I'd bet that few extra features are actually added.

That is true. And DVD offered a other advances over VHS other than better video quality - like random access, which made it easier to offer things like deleted scenes and other special features.

All HD-DVD and BluRay have to offer is better video quality (and DRM). I think most people are content with their DVDs for now.
