I'm 36 and havent come close to anything like that.
I have 4 brothers and sisters (all older), nor have they nor their significant others. Nor have any of their children. Or my aunts or uncles, grandmas or grandpas.
To assume that you will at some point in your life encounter a situation bad enough to warrant the need of a gun, IS being paranoid.
I have my Kershaw speed safe on me most the time.
Not so much for self defense, but because a knife is often very utilitarian.
I think you guys are still reeling with jealously regarding the titanium spork. It's OK, just admit it -- it owns you!
I'm confused. So lets say I have a gun on me. And I get assulted by a guy pointing his gun at me, demadning my wallet. Am I supposed to attempt to quick draw him?
Never bring a spork to a gun fight.
I do not carry anything and see no reason why I would ever need to do so.

What the hell is the "something else" people are carrying for protection? Like a giant dildo or short length of rubber hose with nails in it?

A gun is a tool and is only as good as the operator. Carrying isn't about being macho or feeling protected simply because you have a gun. The gun does not replace your eyes, ears, common sense, and anticipation of trouble.
Had you seen the guy coming, you would have made eye contact communicating your awareness of him and affirming your readiness by showing confidence instead of fear or intimidation, moved to a better area, etc. This alone would deter most attacks. If not, by the time he's coming toward you, you should already be drawing.
Most attacks start by somebody following their victim after choosing them. Followed to your car, a dark spot, away from people, etc. You need to notice things like that and deter from a distance with your attitude and body language. If they continue, you take the initiative and confront them before you move to their ideal location (eg turn around and tell something when there are alot of people around). The weapon is something you have ready when you turn that dark corner to you car and see the guy isn't giving up.
I pack two weapons at all times. They're attached to the bottoms of my arms. They're called hands. I AM a deadly weapon.

I do this regardless of whether I'm armed or not...and I'm never armed actually.
Internet tough guys sigh.
Until some 90 lb crack head 17 year old puts a 9mm hole through your aorta for the $20 in your wallet.
I m 6'3" 220, have black belts and Im a formidable fighter, especially owing to my mind over matter mental conditioning. I still carry an HK .40. None of the above means squat when your body is physically disabled and unable to function mechanically by someone half your size with no regard for another person's life, liberty, and property.
