I have a leatherman, but it's more for a utility role than anything.

That said, I work strictly in federal construction on military bases. CC on a military base is a big No-No.

Sadly I feel I need to carry sometimes depending on where I'm going.

I was doing tutoring one night a week at a place in a bad part of town, working with grade school kids. A couple months ago one of the other tutors got mugged walking back to his car. Turns out one of the kids being tutored tipped off some gangbangers that the guy had a bad back and couldn't put up a fight, so he'd be a easy target. They beat him down to the ground and took his money, wallet, watch and cell. Grade school kids pointing out easy marks to the gangbangers!

I agree that situational awareness is paramount to avoiding trouble but it's just as important to be able to defend yourself if necessary. The number of home invasions is rising and they are happening in all kinds of neighborhoods. The fact is that many bad guys don't really care about getting caught any more as they only get a slap on the wrist in most cases, so this type of crime will continue to increase.

Sometimes I long for the days when the cops would just beat the crap out of people who committed burglaries and muggings because that really was a deterrent. You got a lot of pain and no free stay in a comfy jail, and you knew if you did it again you'd get beat again. But that's not a realistic way to handle things any more.

I'm 36 and havent come close to anything like that.
I have 4 brothers and sisters (all older), nor have they nor their significant others. Nor have any of their children. Or my aunts or uncles, grandmas or grandpas.

To assume that you will at some point in your life encounter a situation bad enough to warrant the need of a gun, IS being paranoid.

I'm 30, I don't know a single person who would have ever needed the following

1) A first aid kit.
2) A fire extinguisher
3) A fire alarm
4) A carbon monoxide alarm

Yet everyone I know has these things. To assume you will at some point in your life need these items IS being paranoid.

Other paranoid items I own that I will probably never use.

Weather radio, hand crank flash light, bottled water/MRE food (anyone who had to live though a time where they couldn't reach a store is with me here), UPS backup systems, Gas generator, jumper cables, portable battery charger/jumper, network backup storage, off-site backup, home alarm system, dead bolt locks, steel security doors on outside, a spare tire in each car, full coverage insurance (really, like it could ever be my fault....), home owners insurance, flood insurance, computer antivirus, etc. The list goes on and on.

I was taught to be prepared.

The few items I do have from that list are because I'm forced to (smoke detector for example, same with car insurance) not because I feel the need for it. I did buy a UPS, but I'm not really sure why; I think people here just talked me into it.

You were taught to be paranoid and afraid. This entire country is being brainwashed of things to be scared of.

You're more likely to die on your way to buy a lottery ticket than you are to actually win the lottery.

Just don't buy lottery tickets.

On average, people fear spiders more than they do death.

Carry a spider with you, unless of course, you are Spiderman.

A gun is a tool and is only as good as the operator. Carrying isn't about being macho or feeling protected simply because you have a gun. The gun does not replace your eyes, ears, common sense, and anticipation of trouble.

Had you seen the guy coming, you would have made eye contact communicating your awareness of him and affirming your readiness by showing confidence instead of fear or intimidation, moved to a better area, etc. This alone would deter most attacks. If not, by the time he's coming toward you, you should already be drawing.

Most attacks start by somebody following their victim after choosing them. Followed to your car, a dark spot, away from people, etc. You need to notice things like that and deter from a distance with your attitude and body language. If they continue, you take the initiative and confront them before you move to their ideal location (eg turn around and yell something when there are alot of people around). The weapon is something you have ready when you turn that dark corner to you car and see the guy isn't giving up.

Best description of situational awareness I've seen yet. Well done.

I personally believe it is not a bad idea to carry a weapon though. Take a look at situations like the Discovery channel, and that beer distributor (along with VT, Ft Hood, and many more). Those go to show that no matter where you are a situation where a CCW would be useful might arise. Knowing your surroundings cannot always protect you.

The problem is on a lot of private property from businesses, to schools, to military bases carrying a firearm is illegal.

Bullshit.
If my interaction with modern Americans is any indication they arent afraid of a god damn thing cuz they're too busy living inside their heads or too worried about Britney and Lindsey. They have no fucking clue how brutal and cruel the world is and even if they have a clue they honestly think the government can & will protect them.
And what do they do when their fragile little fantasy is shaken up?
They find somebody to sue.
Anybody. Doesnt matter. The government, their fellow Americans, big business. Anyone who doesn't make them feel safe and protected but has deep pockets.

Knife (mainly for utility purposes) and pepper-spray (defense) both are in my pocket or strapped to my side every time I leave my apartment.

Inside my apartment, I have my rifle.
