Valid point, but I take issue with the "often." When you take away the irony from sarcasm, what do you have left? A simple insult. No beauty. No wit. Just a slur, a derogatory remark devoid of any sort of literary flourish.

Verbal assaults without irony-laced sarcasm are as graceful as a fat man in high heels.

To me, irony is an inseparable part of sarcasm, and I won't insult someone without proper usage. It's just good manners.
