I found out a few coworkers' salaries in my Request To Hire document (used as a basis of comparison to justify my own salary). Making ~10% more than people who've been around for ~6-7 years with MS degrees. Nice to know that my PhD's worth something

So you for-went 6-7 years of pay so that you could be 10% higher up... I guess if you prefer academics and only went to work because you couldn't find a faculty position...

Actually: people are happier at work when they know what everyone else makes, this is because it quickly leads to equality of pay for the same job: something that makes almost everyone (those that don't make the most) feel less jealous/used/exploited and makes the top-paid person in the job-title feel less exploitative and superior.

There shouldn't equality of pay for the same job. Some people are better than others.

For a example, a person could be 2-3x more productive than another person in the same position. The lesser person isn't necessarily bad worker, but the better worker should be compensated better.

I let my former co-workers know after I was gone for about a month. Some where getting short changed and I wanted them to know how things stacked up.

This. People with the same job title may have very different levels of effectiveness.

Unfortunately it doesn't always work this way and in many cases, it seems the ones that produce get paid less than the slackers. If you can't beat them (the slackers), time to join them!

It has to do more with people speaking up. A lot of time the so called slackers if paid more are also doing things behind the scenes many don't realize.

if you know you are getting paid more than everybody else, best keep your mouth shut.

However if you think you are at/near the bottom of the totem pole, best to gather as much info as you can cuz the squeeky wheel gets the grease

me? I refrain from such discussions

In my position I can see everyone's salaries, even the CEO's. It's good because I get to see how much everyone makes, it sucks because I get to see how much everyone makes.

The only salary numbers my coworkers and I talk about are positions above and below us and what our bonus percentage is.

We make the same as everyone else...the salary is listed every time there's a position posted and it doesn't (ever) change.

I'm so used to being a government employee (with public salary info) that I sometimes forget how sensitive some people are about how much they make. I don't get why it's such a huge deal.

see thats what i dont get

private sector, it is a cardinal sin to talk about salary

public sector, everyone and their monkey knows your salary

in the public sector, it seems like salaries and raises are a lot more standardized.

in the private section, it's all about what you can negotiate for yourself along with merit-based raises that probably aren't applied equally over the years.

The bolded part is what all of the people who work public sector jobs don't understand. Discussing merit based raises never ends well.

You don't get it because you can't work harder to get a promotion or a raise that you feel like you earned. If I know I'm working harder than my coworkers and then they get a bigger raise, that would piss me off.

There's a reason that there are so many stereotypes about government workers. If there is no incentive to earn more or to be recognized financially in some way for increased contributions, why would anyone do it? I'm sure a handful of people still do, but in my organization most people work their ass off all the time because at the end of the year they are compensated for it. When I go to work, I find ways to increase the amount of work I do as often as I can because then I can use it as leverage for a bigger raise every April. I never show up and do the required amount of work. It's a totally different mentality. I can coast or I can work my ass off and there is a substantial difference at the end of the year.

Of course getting only a MS makes more sense (economically). I just really wanted to do a PhD is all, but am not particularly keen on academia. Always intended to head into industry.
