I have no sympathy for those who are plagued by advertising on AT. This is a great forum that serves tens of thousands of people. Should Anand pay for it all out of his own pocket? Those of you who can afford a subscription but tag along for a free ride need to kick in with some loot.

Never, regardless. However the more irritating the ad, the less I visit the site.

thats why i stopped using yahoo and started using google. plus google's search started getting really good.

There's ways that websites can make ads so they are unobtrusive and actually convienient.

Fat Wallet has a great program set up where if you include the words "Staples", "Best Buy", "Office Depot" "Comp USA" , etc
in your posts, they are automatically converted into referal links to those companies websites.

I'd say AT's Hot Deals forum is at least as big as FW's ... they could making a good chunk of change off that.

And other websites .. DVDtalk for example have two rows of banner ads at the top, yet its not obtrusive.
They even have about a dozen links at the very top of their forums pages to various stores that their members use.

AT needs to market its ad space better and use it more efficiently.

Having ONE ad take up a column thats about 10% of your screen, and causing blank space to run down the whole page is not the way to do it

I havent seen an ad since about 1999 on the computers I use. I also block any shockwave/flash BS, nosey java applets, blinking text, or popups. ON TV I do the same with a tivo box, HBO or PBS commerical free stuff.

I refuse to be sold to w/o my permission.

Honestly I miss the days of basic HTML pages which were clean and fast.

Only if it's advertising something I might be interested in. 99,9% of the time it isn't.

The last time I ordered RAM from Crucial, I got there by clicking on the banner here. So long as the banner remains unobtrusive, I will continue to do so.

I would never, however, follow any ad that shows up on the left. The fact that measures were taken to keep it from being blocked makes it all the more infuriating. I still have faith that BBWF's CSS hacking skills will yeild a solution for Mozilla-based browsers...

When they're relevant. I clicked on an ad for Ikaruga this morning (I didn't know it was out for the GC)

I usually don't click on ads. There is one exception: flashing ads. I'll click on the ad and then close the window that pops up before anything is downloaded. The reason: it stops the flashing and I can go on browsing without that annoyance. Plus if the site pays per click, that just made the flashing ad site lose money...

I never click on the ads just out of spite that they are they bothering me.

However, I tried one of these new ads out b/c it was for anandtech. These new ads on the left are totally retarted! They open in your current anandtech window they don't even open up a new window! Someone is clueless out there!

No, well, sort of, I found that if you click the addbar on the left you can drag it to the bottom of the screen.

Never clicked one, then again I don't order much online either. I stick to parts-swapping with people on the car BBS's I frequent and ordering from large, established stores (e.g. Amazon).

i don't click on ads online, and i've never bought anything i've seen a commercial for on tv as a result of seeing the ad.

argh, those adds on the left are pissing me off. they detract from the format of the forums and they just plain piss me off. i don't know if this is a move to get more subscribers or what, but the effect it's having on me is anger and frustration.

oh, and to answer the question: no, i never click on adds.
