you're 22 and thinking that? damn...

john sexton (president of ny fed reserve and NYU) was 35 when he went to law school and embarked on his legal career, just to put things in perspective

I left college because of this.

Every Friday and Saturday night, head out to a fraternity or apartment party, drink, chill with drunk people and loud music, maybe grab a slice of pizza, head back.

It became as routine as going to class (maybe more so, seeing as how I could skip many a class and still have a B average).

Fun? Yeah, especially during the party. But then on Sunday you realize what a black hole the whole thing is. An excuse to throw away four years of life in the name of getting an education.

The thing is, everyone else seemed to be perfectly happy. If college is the best time of your life, is the best thing in life being drunk at a loud party? I suppose I'm just different...

try getting a real major
Why?

I don't enjoy science or engineering.

Doesn't matter financially either, I'll be making more than any "real major" graduate when I finish a MS this year.

Accounting, CPA track...I suppose I don't "know" exactly how much I'll make, but average figures says it'll be more than enough.

You said to get a real major, I assumed that was because people with "real majors" work harder to earn more money. Well, I get all my work done during the week and have free weekends, and save buying a house or travel, I'm not going to know how to spend the money I'll be making.

Oh, and it doesn't even matter, because the people in the harder majors either were non social and stayed inside when they finished their work, or went to the same parties as the rest of us.

You don't enjoy science or engineering but prefer accounting? Wow. Accounting appears to me to be one of THE most boring subjects one could ever pursue. To each his own, I guess.

Unfortunately, none of this matters. Some of the happiest people in the world are volunteers!!!

Here are a few things to get you started, but then you should move on to something else.......

Walk, run or bike!!! It maybe sound too simple, but do it. Watch what happens! (Get up an hour early & spend 30 minutes of it walking. Pay close attention to everything you see and hear while you do).

Become accountable to other people!! (Don't drop ANY appointments for the next 30 days and let people know it!) Watch what happens!!

Go to a church!!! (If you don't like it, stop going. But don't go to a friggin' dungeon. Go somewhere you think you could sit & listen for an hour!) Watch what happens!

Get involved with something that helps other people!! (Meals on wheels. Helping at a local school. Help one of those fund-raising car washes. Wash, dry, whatever. Just offer your help anywhere and everywhere. Someone will take you up on it. And don't even THINK about getting something in return.) ...........Watch what happens!!

Whether you think your work load is too little or too much, do what I mentioned above. Your life will change and you'll feel like you jumped on a moving train..........I promise!!!

Sometimes I feel that way. What really kills me is that I work my ass off at a dead beat job 40 hours a week while going to school full time, and still sometimes don't make as much as I need to pay the month's bills. I only have myself to blame, but I'm trying to rectify that now. What I really want is to get my work career on track with my education, and free up some time to actually do something.

to be honest that's more or less what I'm feeling now. I'm an engineering student, doing very well, so I get the feeling that my life is going somewhere. At the same time, I'm still just a damn student, just taking harder classes and getting smashed on the weekends now. Oh well, I've been down before, but never stayed that way for long. Good times around the bend, and all that.

Here's to tommorow.

werd.

There's no way around this one folks, so the best you can do is barely keep your sanity, find joy in the odd moment, don't p!ss too many others off and change your socks every day.

no one is stopping you from working for yourself nad writing your own ticket thru life.

YOU CHOOSE TO LIVE THE LIFE THE WAY YOU ARE.

many countries do not allow for such freedom of choice.

No, never thought it's happened to me because we try very hard to experience lots of things in life.

Some people here prefer to spend their time watching their savings/retirement accounts grow while I prefer to go otu and do things. I always look back at what we've done and smile and those memories keep me going because I'll know I'll be back soon, creating new memories that I may re-live.

No you don't, you chose to live the way your neighbors, as in community make you. Our choices are limited. In fact, most of the meaningless choices we get to make only increase our burden and make a lasting dependancy, thanks to our capitalist constant - greed. Although we have a crazy capitalist market on one hand, we have a powerful and nosy social force on the other.

You can't choose to live in the woods and be left alone subsistence farming, your neighbors will take your land for not paying your taxes. You can't bike on this road. You can't cross our bridge with out paying a toll. If you own a certain plant we might take it away from you and lock you up, and make you pay us money.

Simply put, I'm saying survival is not so easy. It shouldn't be taken for granted, and you can't chose anything you want, especially if you want to be left alone. As for writing your own ticket, I want to be in the NFL. I have the size and physical talent, but not the experience or connections. I didn't play in college, didn't join the clubhouse, go through proper channels so I missed the boat. I can't go play now, not even on practice squad or in europe because I didn't plan ahead of time. Planning is a very necessary skill, as you work through which choices you have to make as consequences of others.

To the OP, I feel your pain. I'm not much older than you and the office world is driving me nuts. I'm smart enough and have enough talent to go do many other things and I'm thinking I wouldn't be so depressed if I did my own bussines or changed industries/careers. Computers and code are fun, but not so much for work for others.
