I think non-SMT/HT procs are purer, so I've always bought and preferred i5.

Also the geforce 6800, 460 and AMD Vega 56 seemed very unique and special. AOSP and archlinux are essential too.

I thought I was attached to my headphones I got in 2002. One of the first things I bought on Amazon. But then one side stopped working and I bought new ones and they're so much better, I don't miss my old ones at all.

I used to, when I was super into hardware. G4 Cube is still my favorite!

Now I get attached to ideas. Like when we started having kids, I went through a phase where I digitized the crap out of everything I owned, so now I'm fairly tech-minimalistic. I have a flat-screen TV with a Roku built-in & a single remote to control it. I use a Chromebook. No more Legos...just Minecraft (tablet/TV/VR). I gave up on art supplies after our walls & floors got decorated multiple times, so I'm saving up for an iPad with a pen now, haha.

So as far as ideas go, I like instant-use (ex. Chromebook, Roku, iPhone), I like convenience (iOS App Store's walled garden, single Roku remote to control everything), I like lack-of-crap. Whereas before, I had a PFsense router, FreeNAS file server, Counter-strike server, Plex server, and all kinds of random hardware experiments, I keep it a lot more simple these days. I have a basic smarthome setup that is now solely controlled by Alexa. Nothing to have to manage, everything just kinda works & stays out of my way...

Oh, yes, I have a special love/hate (mostly hate) relationship with my phone (iPhone 6), mostly because it's voice recognition sucks and it's autocorrect functionality is even worse.

I'm not sure how I've resisted the urge to throw the phone out the window so far.

My rig, aka desktop PC. I've built mine since high school days and while I actually am not on it that much (maybe an hour a day average) I like to have a fairly powerful one because I do like the ability to play modern games and I also do mobile and Unity development. My rig was recently fuct but thankfully I figured it out (the power supply was causing it to randomly shutdown into a "hibernate" type mode; fuckin thing, a Thermaltake, was maybe two years old).

IMO, that's not a good switch, actually manipulating things in the physical world is important. Same deal with art, one accepts that odds are something will get art-ified that you'd prefer to have stayed original, but it's just stuff and a kid's mind will be with them forever.

I'm on the fence about it. I like the idea of physical manipulation & I grew up with Legos myself (as many as I could afford mowing lawns, haha), and I don't like the idea of too much screen time...but on the flip side, Minecraft is a fairly creative system that lets you do basic programming & build an unlimited amount of blocks of various materials & create compound objects using crafting & building techniques. And also doesn't cost freaking $60 for a tiny set!

I'm still refinishing our basement after the flooding issue, so I may turn half of that into a game room of sorts & have like a giant lego table at some point, and that way it can stay contained in one location, not be stepped up, not be broken up into pieces in every single room, and not get eaten by other, smaller children, hahaha. But for now, Minecraft is pretty dope! 6DOF VR Minecraft is pretty trippy as well, if you have't tried it!

I like old computers because it feels more meaningful to watch my equipment suffer and labor under my workload. As if it somehow makes that game of Quake more important. Nowadays on my main PC my system loads in less than 15 seconds. I open 50 tabs in my browser in a minute. I load up AAA games in a matter of seconds.

In the old days, clicking the button on my old Desktop and hearing those seeking heads clatter around while I went to get a shower during its 10 minute boot process just felt like work was getting done.. Even when it was preventing me from getting work done. It's irrational, but that's feels for you.
