no because my work comp is a total POS. HP elitebook from 4 years ago. core 2 duo

there is actually only 1 computer here more powerful than what i run at home

its a dual hex core Xenon workstation with 32 gigs of ram, i use it almost daily but it feels slower because its not running a SSD.

however it is connected to 60 TB or raid 6 storage which i would not mind having at home

Even if my work machine was better, it's base load contains ~double the amount of applications, making my home machine scream comparatively.

My work machine is definitely better than my home computer (laptop).

Laptop
2.3GHz i7
8GB RAM
500GB HDD
GT 650M
15.4" display @ 1680x1050

Work PC
2x 2.27GHZ Xeon E5520
12GB RAM
GTX 285
2x 300GB SCSI (RAID 1)
2x 24" displays @ 1920x1080 each

Talked to the systems guy and I'm probably getting an SSD or two soon as well.

No my work computers are always slow, and my home computer I always try to keep up to date with new hardwares.

This has never happened ....

The closest would have been when I was in high school. I had a 486DX 33 that I got for free, we had 486 SX machines in the pharmacy.

Otherwise, right now, at work I have a core 2 duo laptop with 2GB of ram, I've had this thing for a damn long time, and I don't get a new one because it's too big a hassle to deal with.... I'm delaying it as much as I can.

At home I've got an i5 box with crossfire 6870s and a triple screen eyefinity setup, a phonem2 box with a 4870 hooked up to my 106 inch 1080p projector, and finally another phenom2 mobo+cpu which I plan to install into a several year old antec case with a 450 watt power supply ... which will replace my old home server (p4)
and I can finally run more than 1 virtual machine at a time (16GB of ram will be a nice jump from the 1384MB I've got now)

I gave up and bought myself a laptop that I mostly use for work, but also use at home a fair amount (when I'm not using my gaming PC). So is my work computer better than my home computer?

I know the feeling, we have some impressive workstations at work yet every time I use them I find myself getting annoyed at how sluggish they feel, I'm seriously spoiled by my SSDs at home.

I can pretty much give an ironclad guarantee that my work computer will NEVER be better than my home computer......and the home computer isn't all that great either, but it smokes the one at work!

heh, not when the video card at work costs as much as my computer at home.

My work computer has never ever been better than my home computer. Heck, I just got rid of XP and moved on the W7 64bit last week. And this is on a brand new Dell that IT gave me. It has an E-8400 in it...........

I spec out the comps for work, so yeah I got myself something nice. I7, 16gb ram, 256 GB crucial m4 ssd, and a 27" monitor( need to upgrade this, 1080:'( kinda sucks for terminal work) don't think I've ever booted Ubuntu faster.

Slightly bests my core i5 750 at home, but I do have 2 m4's in raid 0 so that's fast, a 7970, and 16gb ram. Was first gen of the sata/usb3 so I can tell a big difference in terms of stability and general speed versus the sandy bridge work machine.

Must suck to work somewhere without regular product cycles, I'm already phasing out core2duos in favor of core i3's when possible/necessary.

Yeah, this doesn't happen often for me. My work laptop and desktop are old Core 2 Duo based machines, while my home laptop and desktop are quad core i7's with upgraded graphics.

I don't expect to get new work systems for another year.

My work computer has generally been about 3 generations worse than any computer I've built, so I've never actually experienced what you're talking about.
Often the same for me.

For a time, I had one of the oldest systems in the building. It was a pretty kick-ass system. 8 years ago, when they paid a few thousand dollars for it.
(I do a lot of 3D CAD work. So, yeah.....no need to spend anything on fancy stuff. Up until maybe 2 years ago, I had a 128MB videocard.)

Until recently.
After much incessant complaining, and causal demonstrations of how I spent quite a bit of time waiting for my computer to play catch-up with me, they finally built me something worthy of Mordor.
- i7 quad-core with Hyperthreading (though most applications still can only use one core at a time)
- 8GB RAM
- SSD
- 2GB ATI CAD-level videocard (I don't remember the product line)

So I finally ended up with something quite nice, and better than my home PC, with the exception of my 3TB of RAID5 storage and 27" and 23" monitors at home.

There's a hell of a range though. One or two systems there are still running on 512MB of RAM and a P4.

My work computers (KVM with two towers that run on two different domains):
1) 2002 Intel Celeron 1.8 GHz CPU on a Socket 478 motherboard. Williamette-128 core, 180nm.
2) 2003 Athlon64 2800+ 1.8GHz on a Socket 754 motherboard. Clawhammer core, 130nm.

They both have 1GB of RAM and use noisy, grinding 40GB hard drives. Unlike some of you who use AutoCAD, Pro/E or do heavy graphics work, my needs are rather modest. However, both my computers are at least five years behind where they need to be. My workflow is basically Office 2003, a proprietary Learning Management System and a proprietary CRM application (I work in the Training Department for the Customer Service department for a large service provider). But yes, I routinely work with large spreadsheets, upto a hundred megabytes in size with tens of thousands of records.

I usually work on those files from home on my Core i5 750 (overclocked to 4GHz) with 12GB of RAM because the work computers grind to a halt and are borderline unusable for anything more complicated than e-mail, IM and light Excel/Powerpoint stuff. Hell, even watching a 240p video on Youtube on Google Chrome brings the PCs to their knees. I don't have VPN access though, so it's a rudimentary 'email large files to yourself' workflow.

Managers get personal laptops with I think a four-year-upgrade plan. Every 'Manager of Managers' (Program Managers/Directors/AVPs/VPs) seems to have a less-than-a-year-old powerhouse of a laptop. Hell, CSRs have fantastic machines with dual-monitors and everything. Support staff (Training, Administration, Human Resources etc.) have Mesozoic Era computing power.

i built both my work computer and my home computer. since i do most of the tech stuff at work, my work computer will always be better than any other pcs in the office, but it will always be less cool than my home pc. my home computer is way more awesome, cause i need to game on it.

My work computer has a Xeon W3550 and 12gb of RAM, 256gb PCIe SSD, some higher end nVidia GPU. I just laugh because it's way overkill. All my work is done through our local cloud server. And there's two of them! One for redundancy. I guess they wanted something that would last a long time. I've also got two MacPros in the studio which due the grunt work.
