Do you find television too embarassing?

I haven't had commercial television in years, I do occasionally download shows... The Office was reccomended to me a lot so I picked up season one, and I find I can't watch it.

The humor is based mostly on feeling superior to the character being lampooned. Unfortunately I suffer from feeling empathy for the characters and therefore feel embarrased. I've gotten so annoyed by being continuously embarassed that I haven't been able to watch past episode two of season 1.

Does anyone else find modern commercial television to embarrasing to watch?

No, I find shows like The Office too stupid to watch...as is MOST commercial television. It seems more and more, like they expect their audience to be mildly retarded 16 year olds...and maybe they're right more often than not...

That's why my wife doesn't like the show.

I get where you're coming from, but it doesn't bother me.

I don't care for The Office because it seems too much like an office. It's like Office Space, minus most of the humor, with 30% more drudgery and 18% more tedium.

Whereas I realize that most people find the embarassing situations of others amusing I never have, not even in fiction. I find I want to step in and correct the situation.

I know, I'm being over-sensitive. That's what many people have told me.

One of the best shows on TV, is the office. Funny stuff, especially as you get to know the characters through all the seasons.

I get what you are saying. I often feel strong empathy for the characters too and sometimes avoid especially awkward/embarrassing moments. But I can't say I've ever felt a strong reaction in comedy. I don't watch Office though so I don't know how bad it is.

I know what you mean. Sometimes I cringe at stuff like that in TV shows and movies.

I really like The Office, though. Even if it's almost painful to watch sometimes.

If you think the Office is embarrassing, don't bother watching Extras. Holy god, that is an embarrassing show.

Season 1 is pretty bad.. it's pretty much a bad ripoff of the original UK version. After Season 1, at least the episodes I've seen, aren't too bad.

I also feel this, especially like when I watch a movie and a character is getting framed, or ruined for no reason...I just want to step in and say "Hey guys, look, this is wrong."

Some people dont understand this concept. The people who didnt get it growing up and never had any psych education think they find it funny for other reasons. As simple and uncensored as entertainment and advertising is nowadays... there is actually a whole bunch of triggers, leads, and misleads.

Old example. the person slipping and falling on a banana peel with the quick whistle noise as they fall on the floor with a funny look on their face that nobody in real life would ever make. (mild)

New example. The parents walking in on son with his manhood in a sock while watching scrampled pron. Then repeated dever times throughout the movie as well as the following sequels. (funny)

The British version is a hundred times more painful to watch. At least with the American version once you know the history and personalities of the characters it becomes much less awkward -- deep down, they're all genuinely good people with (mostly) good intentions. (Possible exception: Creed.)

embarassing? i think you are using the wrong word to describe your feelings. there is nothign you can be embarassed about unless say someone else is watching it with you and you feel embarassed at say sexual jokes but even then it owuldn't be embarassed just uncomfortable. embarassed when europians are at yoru house watching because amrican tv is inferior? seriously d00d wrong word.
