Because most of us eat the way we enjoy the food, not the way some pompous wanker like you says we should like it.

It all comes out the same anyways. Why not eat it how you like it?

Firstly, a part of me doesn't die nor does baby Jesus cry when she does this, I just get mildly annoyed.

Secondly, it's kinda awkward to go to a nice sushi joint and then have someone eating ignorantly. Does that make sense? Imagine going to a chinese restaurant and your friend stabbing his chicken with one chopstick and then eating it. That sort of embarassment, about not knowing how to eat according to the costums. I.E. Ignorance.

EDIT: To further illustrate my point, my dad didn't know how to use chopstick and it would be odd watching him struggle with them, so I taught him and all is well. Should I casually mention "hey, did you know that the giner is used between different rolls?" to educate her?

What I want to know is....do you have a link that supports your contention that ginger is to be solely used for palate cleansing??

its also somewhat bad to not finish all the wasabi ur given, but that could be a rumor or just in hardcore japanese places.

myself, i eat the ginger on top of almost all my sushi, i just like the flavor it adds. i know what it's meant for, but i like to add it. i also eat it by itself. sometimes when im done with my sushi, i make ginger sandwiches with wasabi, some rice, and ginger all wrapped up.....sue me.

Gari (Pickled Ginger Root): The thinly-sliced pink stuff. Used to freshen the mouth between bites of sushi, pickled ginger root comes in numerous small and incredibly thin slices. It is eaten with chopsticks (hashi) and essential for cleansing your palate between eating different types of sushi.

Calm down there chachi, mabey spit out a little of that piss you got in your corn flakes this morning.

I don't care if she likes it that way, if she wants to eat it like that then all the power to her.
It doesn't change the fact that the whole point of the ginger is to clean your palate, not flavor the food.

Do you eat Creme brule without crystalizing the top with a torch? Do you eat Baked Alaska without putting it in the oven to firm the meringue? No, you don't, that's just the way it's done.

There is some amount of "food etiquette" with sushi. Personally I don't give two flying shits if she wants to eat it like that. No matter if she wants to eat it like that, that's not the way it was intended.

It all comes out the same anyways. Why not eat it how you like it?
Because the whole point of good food is how it tastes going in. If you eat the ginger with the sushi you're ruining the taste.

Mabey both of you are too umm, ignorant to know what you're talking about?

While I agree...maybe she doesn't really know what it's used for??? Letting her know what the ginger is actually there for is being a good friend...if she decides to use the ginger as a garnish AFTER she's aware of it's purpose then that's her decision.

If I was nice I would say something like, "Wow, I can't believe how well the ginger works in cleansing the pallate before I try a different piece of sushi." While making it obvious to her what you're doing. That would probably be the nicest and least confrontational way...let her figure it out on her own with a little *push* ya know?

However, I'm not nice, so what I would say is, "You do know what the ginger is really there for right? You see those two little japanese men laughing? Yeah, they're laughing at you!"

I agree with sampson ... you should tell her, she might not have tried it without the ginger and might like it more that way.

It's like going to a really nice steak place and ordering their best cut of meat but then later lathering the steak with A1 sauce or when you go to a nice chinese restaurant and start throwing soy sauce on every dish before actually trying it. Good food is suppose to be tried the way the cook meant it to be ... if you don't like it, then eat it however you like. At least chk to see if she knows it tastes better w/o the ginger.

good point. when it comes to steak, i always eat it plain, then add A1 accordingly, but i very rarely add sauces. ive been adding ginger to my sushi since day 1 though. even though i know what it tastes like plain, i still add ginger. maybe next time i will go gingerless and see how it works out.

Maybe she's saving a step; eating and cleansing at the same time. Is she efficient like that in other things?

If you don't understand the difference between eating the ginger as a garnish and using a chopstick as a spear, I'm truly sorry for you. I don't know about you, but most people go to a restaurant because they enjoy the food, not to show off that they know how to eat according to the customs. It's a restaurant, not a God damn finishing school.

FFS, I request a fork when I go to a Japanese restaurant. Much more convenient. I suppose that annoys you too though.

The solution to your problem is to stop being such a self-important little snot and let your friend eat however they please. If they like the ginger as a garnish, deal with it and keep your mouth shut.

seriously, I'm not crying over this - i'm just midly annoyed. Remember, some sushi joints are upper crust affairs, expensive and the sort of place you dress up to go to - wouldn't you be annoyed if you go to a nice place and then someone you were with was sprinkling mints on her steak?
I stay out of stuffy places like that. Their food generally sucks anyway. For 25% of the price of a meal at one I can cook a steak myself and have it come out far better.

And you know what, I'd probably just laugh with happy amusement if I was stuck in a restaurant like that and my friend was sprinkling mints on her steak. In fact, I'd chalk it up as a mark in her favor.

Or maybe, just maybe, they've tried it both ways and honestly enjoy it more when they eat the ginger with the sushi.

I suppose it's impossible that they could have a different opinion than you though.

Nothing wrong with eating it with your fingers, some consider it the "right" way.

Yeah, this is pretty dumb. Eating is not an event to show off your form or knowledge, its to enjoy yourself. I'm from an Italian family, so maybe that's just the way we see things. But I'll tell you this, I've eaten at a fair amount of very upscale Italian restaurants in NY, DC, and Philly, and I always get a glare from somebody nearby when my bread goes in to clean up the plate. Except, when you look around, all of the other Italian patrons (discerning this by the language they're speaking to the waitstaff) are doing the same. Take a lesson from the folks that enjoy their food and a little too much wine

I'll eat my food however I please. If you don't like how I'm eating, look elsewhere and stfu.

There's no 'right' way to eat anything. There are some 'suggested' ways which you obviously adhere to for fear that someone might think less of you. Honestly though, no one gives a damn how you eat your food.

Hell, when I eat sushi, I unroll the seaweed and eat the rest. Why? Simply because I don't like how the seaweed tastes. I've tried it both ways and I prefer it without. Cry more?

Sorry freedom, I have always known about the ginger, and I still eat it WITH the rolls. It's delicious.

I have an obsession with Sushi, too. Let her be. Hell, you should try it!
