I never have and never will. Same goes for the whole birthday card crap. My team is always doing it for each other and they just dont get the hint that I dont care because they keep asking me to pitch in.

No. My boss' boss did buy my daughter a bounty of gifts when she was born. It was quite awkward because I hardly knew her.

I've given my immediate boss and his boss (VP of our biz division) bottles of rum and cigars when I come back from a Caribbean vacation. Everyone is cool with it and it helps keep happy those that sign your paycheck.

This is precisely why the practice is banned in my company. The "happiness" of the boss wrt employees should be based on employee performance. Gift giving muddies the waters.
