Do you get gifts for your boss?

I got mine one but I'm not sure if I made a mistake. See, the boss likes trains. He has a lot of them. He even has a conductor's hat in his office. So when I went to Japan last August I bought him a set from Yodobashi Camera and had it nicely packaged. Now his birthday is coming up on May Day but this may be inappropriate.

It's definitely not part of American culture to buy gifts for your boss when you vacation. At most, some local treats that you bring back to share with the office.

If you are appreciative of having a job, then there is nothing wrong with giving your boss a gift/card whatever.
Where I work, we all chip in to get them something, and, it works out well for everyone.

Just because they are your boss doesn't mean you should shun them.

Our boss takes the whole team out to lunch for every Christmas. We all pitch in to buy her a Christmas gift. It works out to be pretty much even, so effectively we all take ourselves out for lunch

Edit: I've joked about just getting her a gift card to the restaurant where we're eating lunch and giving it to her right before she pays

I've given my immediate boss and his boss (VP of our biz division) bottles of rum and cigars when I come back from a Caribbean vacation. Everyone is cool with it and it helps keep happy those that sign your paycheck.

No, and I even think it is a bit ridiculous when they pass a birthday card or collection envelopes around the office for management birthdays, having kids, etc. Our department head had twins in January and late last year, they hosted a "shower" for him here and prior to that, passed around an envelope for "donations." Screw that -- they don't do that for the rank and file.

I would have given it to him when you got back from the trip instead of made it an occasion. That makes it awkward.

I do buy gifts for people in my office (including my boss) when I see something that is "totally classic them."

For instance, my boss eats peanut butter every day, and I see him digging into a peanut butter jar all the time with a skinny knife. When on vacation, I saw a "Peanut butter knife" that is specially designed to get everything out of the bottom of the jar.

So, token gifts...yeah why not. Occasion gifts...ugh.

I'm the boss in a company of ~80 people, and I have never once received a serious gift (I have received a couple of gag gifts in the >20 years I've been here from senior management), nor considered that I should. We have a fun, but professional relationship as business owner and employees.

I did for Xmas. When we were smaller, it was directly from me. When we got bigger, everyone got a group gift. I wouldn't get a general gift in a "corporate" type place. It looks too much like ass kissing, but in a small company, where everyone is fairly close, I could see doing it. Only for something special I found while out and about. I wouldn't get some random store shit they could get themselves.
