Do you give up your seat for pregnant, elderly, or females?

On the bus/train to work or school, would you give up your seat?

EDIT:

Elderly: Somehow I feel like they deserve the seat more than me so I'll happily give my seat up.

Children: Fvck these little twerps, they don't belong on a packed train or bus, period.

Females: I see guys all the time letting the females sit down while they stand. Fvck'em too.

Pregnant: Sorry and sucks to be you but I didn't give you that 2 minutes of pleasure. Your choice to get knocked up, my choice to let you stand.

No mass transportation options are available for me for my commute. When I am sent downtown or whatever for training or what not, then I sometimes can take the train. The train has never been full enough to run out of seats.

I've given up my seat for womenfolk/elderlyfolk/childrenfolk on airport trams before, I am perfectly stable on my feet.

All of the above. Haven't been on public transportation in a while, but I do end up in waiting rooms. I do seem to draw the line at check-out lines. My only consideration there is if you have just a few items and I have a lot. I'll usually ask if you want to go ahead.

A related story: I was in line at a mom and pop hardware store and a woman asked if she could go ahead of me. Neither of us had many items, but she had more than me. I had a washer and a nut, that's it. And I had a big foam hospital sandals on one foot from recent foot surgery. When she asked, it stunned me for a second. "I'm sorry, what?" Can I go in front of you? "Why?" She looks at me with the same incredulous look I was giving her and says nothing. "Uh, no, I'm good. Thanks." I swear, she could have given me just about any story and I would have let go ahead. Kid in the car, running late for something....anything. But she had no answer. She simply wanted it because she wanted it.

1. It would be misogynistic to give your seat up to a woman. At least that's what is implied by many feminist since it implies they are too weak to stand like the men.
As a result, I never sit on the subway\bus. Even if its empty. I don't want to get involved in that debate.

2. You should give your seat up for old people because if they fall its going to be awkward stepping over them. Helping them back up is also awkward because you have to worry about breaking them.

3. Children should be seated. Preferably over there. Away from me. Not my kid so stay far away. Fuck...is this kid throwing a tempter tantrum? I'm glad I got up now. Now I can move to another part of the car.

4. Pregnant women - see #1. Unless they are really pregnant. Then you should let them sit because otherwise they take up a lot of space when standing.

(Kidding aside...women who look like they could use a break, pregnant women, old people and kids will get my seat)

All the above, but I'm not often on public transit, or in public with limited seating.

Trick question!

1) No sane person ever uses public transport

2) If you do, you stay on your feet at all times, stand near an exit and keep your hands free so that you can draw your weapon in a flash or jump out the door, whichever the situation dictates.

Pregnant of Elderly. Probably children if it was a really young child with a parent. I don't mind standing that much so its not a big deal

I am young and have a good life and have no problem standing. If I can make someone's day better by giving up my seat than I am glad to do so.

Pregnant and/or elderly.

That's complicated, though, because you don't want to mistakenly give it up to a pregnant woman that isn't actually pregnant. I've sweated over that one before, and I usually just stare in the other direction during those uncomfortable minutes throughout the ride.

i give up my seat to females and 99% of them are grateful. i've had a handful of women complain about the fact that i asked. i responded by belittling them the same way they were trying to do to me, but there's no formula for that and i'm not necessarily proud of it. i'm pretty quick-witted and i can figure out exactly where to cut when it comes to verbal confrontation without much effort or delay. it usually gets the people nearby to laugh, which is a bonus.

I am 38 now, so if some girl in her 20s wearing athletic gear obviously in better shape than myself I would not offer a seat to.

This. I always stand on the train. Even if it's empty. Less contact with the filthy surfaces of the train, and I can quickly move away from any weirdos that get on.

I was properly brought up so I do give up seats to the above (plus the disabled) when I use public transport, even though I am registered disabled myself.

You have to achieve perfect balance though, or be lucky enough to live in a city where the light rail doesn't ride like a washing machine missing a few casters. Or just lean up against (hopelessly) stainless steel structures. Usually when standing, though, you pretty much have to grab onto some surface with a hand, which would generally be worse than sitting on questionable seats...especially during rush hour when you need to employ every possible tactic to not rub up against your neighbor.

For me, in the situations where I have to grab something, I am able to reach the highest cross bars on the train because I am not some freak sub-6'2" proto-humans and as such, enjoy premium elite status access to less germy surfaces compared to those more unfortunate versions of the human race than myself.

Yes, I do all that stuff.

Every time I see an elderly woman I get up my seat, that is only when the bus/train is full. I have some rules to this, and I will explain. When I am sitting in the front of the bus like the seat right behind the driver, and the only open spots available are the seats at the back, then I offer my seat, because 7 out of 10 times the driver will not take off until the elderly/pregnant woman is still looking for a place to sit. I actually find it frustrating when I give up my seat, but they want to be all independent and strong, so they do not take my seat, but rather try and stand the whole ride.
I leave my seat and stay standing, sometimes counting the minutes, until their legs start to give up and they walk over to the empty seat and sit. For a time in high school I would get a track log, but some bully ripped that all up. RIP notebook, and strong elderly women.
