If I need it, I update it. Otherwise, why mess with something that isn't broken?

I agree. I check them over and install the ones that say:

"This update is to prevent newbie hackers from exploiting our amateurish code ..."

or the ones that say:

"Download this critical update that we've been forced to release because we can't program worth shite"

Everytime I see that one "update" that deals with the Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs DVD (or whatever movie it was) playback issue I have to laugh.

wasn't that a 'recommeded update', not a 'critical update'?

Yes, but of course I read what each one does.

I am far more selective about "recommended updates."

Only the service packs. When I used to install all of the updates I would notice my machine would start to slow down and the windows directory would eventually get huge and I would end up formatting.

Yes, they're critical. And they wouldn't have come up as such if it didn't apply to my setup.

Yes, you're right. My bad.

I meant - I download all the critical stuff like most people here.

The Recommended stuff - i'm selective about.

They're critical for a reason. Even if you don't use the program its referencing, you're still at risk, because the buggy code is on your computer.

It sure is.

As long as you don't mind being hit by a Nimda or a SQL Slammer worm in the meantime.

Those updates are not ranked as "critical" updates by Microsoft.

It's possible then that the nvidia drivers patch a vulnerability in previous versions.

And MS has really screwed the pooch on Messenger. I got the same problem until I realized that there's MSN Messenger, and there's Windows Messenger, and they're apparently packaged as different products. Just to confuse users, I guess?

I read the descriptions first and decide. So far I have not skipped any OS updates. I've held off on some browser/mediaplayer updates for a while until things were found OK and then updated.

I use a firewall and antivirus so I feel pretty comfortable with things as-is, I'm not in a rush to update. If I will be traveling and be on a direct connection (w/o hardware firewall) then I'll check for latest sig files and vulnerability postings before I go.

I use Win2K and the only critical update I haven't installed is SP4. There's a whole bunch of recommended updates I haven't installed because I don't need them.
