THE BAD SEED.
A sweet little girl and mass murder.
The perfect combination.

Mom had a rule bout playing with matches.
But apparently none about killing the neighbors.

A real classic B movie is something made for the drive-ins back in the 1950s through late-60's. Mostly sci-fi (like Plan 9 From Outer Space previously discussed-the stuff you now see on MST3000), some horror, some monster (like a zillion Godzilla movies and its clones), motorcycle gang movies (best if Jack Nicholson is in some minor role). In the mid-to late sixties drug and hippie movies were a fertile B movie subject, like The Trip by Roger Corman starring Jack Nicholson.

Since drive-ins are nearly nonexistent anymore (only two in my state, and one of those is part time) the only real way to watch a B movie now is on some grade Z TV station with low budget commercials.

And yes, Dr. Strangelove is definitely NOT a grade B movie, and shouldn't be considered one just because it was done in black and white. Stanley Kubrick directed it, one of the greatest directors ever.

There are some quasai B rated movies that almost feel ready for the big time hollywood showing like: Demon seed. Computer AI that impregnates woman.

Forgot about the Puppet Master series - although the later ones are pretty meh --- and pretty much anything by Lionsgate before they became huge.

Other than my rec for this at post 40, this is the only other poster saying this? Ya, They Live is probably one of the greatest B movies ever made.

One of the greatest? Definitely. But the question is favorite, and since we're talking B-movies, that means "great" has nothing to do with it.

My favorite is probably Six-String Samurai.

Big Trouble in Little China

I came here to post it, but the more I think about it I'm not sure it makes the cut. After checking, it had a $20M budget. There was some decent (and bad) SFX for the time, couple of known actors...

I dont think Stone Cold was a B movie. It had a theatrical release, and it was some what of a big deal at the time because Boz was popular. I actually have it on VHS somewhere. I dont think the other movies on that list are B movies either. Heartbreak Ridge was a major movie with a major star. I think Big Trouble in Little China was technically a flop and found its audience on cable, but it was expected to make money. Used Cars had a smaller release, but that doesnt make it a B movie.

That's where I'm having trouble. Where is the line drawn? Do we eliminate anything distributed by a major studio? I can agree with that.
But where do you put the next level, like the Golan-Globus types. They had lower budgets, made a ton of crap, but also had some legitimate successes like Missing In Action (Chuck Norris) and Cobra (Stallone). Are they B-movies?
Or do we limit it strictly to the small independents, like Troma?

It's almost exclusively low budget minus artsy films. So low budget, but not likely at Cannes.

Think big film produced on a shoe string budget. That's how you end up with a hero with a mop (toxic avenger), or a dalek with a plunger.

I think the only B-movies being made today are like the ones made for SyFy and/or direct to video, with no name actors. Stuff like Sharknado. They are specifically made to be cheap filler content, which is what B movies originally were. I dont consider MIA, and definitely not Cobra, B movies. Both kinda have A list talent, decent budget, and major distribution. Cobra made almost $210M worldwide, and another $30M in US rentals. MIA did $23M in the US on a modest $2.5M budget. I think Chuck Norris had enough name recognition at the time to be A list. MIA was after Lone Wolf McQuade, Octogon, Breaker Breaker, Way of the Dragon, etc. Chuck Norris's movies where making around $20M or more in US theaters at the time, which was good.

PSA-Earth Girls Are Easy is running recently on Movieplex. An intentionally low budget 1988 sci-fi comedy/parody/musical. The name star was Geena Davis (very nice in a bikini), the aliens were Jeff Goldblum, Damon Waynons & Jim Carrey (back when he was funny). For fans of B movies, definitively worth watching.

Then my choice is.....

The Vagrant.

It was made by Lou Vockell. He's made a bunch of low budget horror, softcore, and softcore horror pics. I chose The Vagrant because my buddy is playing the part of the Vagrant and his brother is the lead, Frankie.

Mad Max was one of the best cult ones and held the record for a long time, till Blair Witch beat it one money made per cost I guess.

Even if it's mostly bad.

Troma was always great at that shit. Yeah.

One of the reasons Fury Road was so great even though it's not a B.

I think it counts as a B movie, but it's also an early work by an excellent director and has some good actors in it. And the cinematographer captured some excellent night shots that may have influenced 90s t.v. shows. X-Files comes to mind with the flashlights shining through darkness in some episodes.

Best part of this vampire movie is that the vampires are rather unusual. It's not often you see redneck hick vampires.
