I need some friends on PS4 and Steam. I only know 1 guy that has a PS4 and he doesn't play the games I do but then again I don't play much MP.

I actually kind of wish I had a geeky circle of friends like on the show The Big Bang Theory...you know, thursday night having a classic game night playing Zork or something.

I just turned 44 and I don't have any real friends. I have work friends, but that's about it- nobody I could call and say "hey, come watch a movie with me" or something. Been that way for about 15 years. I think it's just something that happens when you get older. My wife is pretty much my best and only friend

I have ~4 IRL friends. I have about as many "half friends." People I do stuff with via my friends, occasionally.

I would imagine most people have like 400 FB friends and 0 real friends.

I remember seeing something about how in the 1980's most people had ~11 friends. That would seem to be the norm to me. I feel like with technology and even normal people now hardly ever going outside "real" friends have dropped for everyone. But dat 400 FB friends though. That guy I haven't seen in 6 years totally got rear ended bad then had bacon for dinner.

In the 90's as a kid I had around 10-15 friends. Some I liked more than others. Like 5 close friends and 10 so-so friends. Technology has made it so that people still feel connected to their old friends when they move to a whole different state and start a new life but I suspect what is going on is that they don't bother to make any new friends in their new area. I think this is having societal effects personally. I'm good though. I get plenty-o face to face non-work socialization.

Having grown up in the early 90's before EVERYONE had the internet I did my fair share of playing wiffle ball in the street and playing in gutters and hanging around outside my neighborhood. That literally does not happen anymore. People have no idea how the fuck to hang out unless its sitting down to eat at a restaurant and going to a movie. Oh wow creative. Or getting super drunk at the bar/club but you can barely hear what anyone is saying anyway.

I've definitely drifted away from my friends. During college, finding new friends was so easy. Within no time I replaced my high school friends that just drifted away from me with another set of friends. Then I moved across the country after graduation, and now those friends have also drifted away from me and I've got no close friends now. I still have places I can crash anytime I visit Jersey (and likewise), so maybe in a sense they are now my close life long friends, who just happen to be 2000 miles away. I guess if I stayed in NJ, things would be different in this regard.

As far as meeting new friends goes - I've tried. I've gone to the gyms, bars, sports activities, etc - but nothing every develops long term now. And my situation hasn't been helping me at all. Graduate school has turned out to be a nightmare, to the point I did suffer depression for an extended period of time and just closed myself up from the outside world. I stopped doing so many things I enjoyed as well (that required a small amount of effort to actually do, like go on a snowboarding trip). It's a lot better now actually working a job I enjoy while school is just something I'm finishing up to the side, but I feel like I'm still going to have to move to a new part of the country after I finish and just start everything completely fresh.

Yes. Only a few "close friends," but a few who are casual friends...but more than just acquaintances.

Always remember...contrary to the old adage, "A friend in need is a pain in the ass."

after HS all my friends went their separate ways. i've had very little contact with them since.

I've made friends where I worked throughout the years but after I left the jobs, rarely kept in contact. only 1 good friend I have that I still hang out with on occasion and that seems to be rarer and rarer. just both busy with other things in our lives.

Have your Mossad friends confessed their involvement with the 9-11 attacks on the US of A yet? ()

A few good ones. My best friends are ones that I see probably once or twice a year. We get together grab dinner and head out for a bunch of drinks. I can't stand seeing people every day I would never want someone who clings to me. That being said, even though I only see these few friends once a year, if that, I know they will do their best to help me if I ever needed it.

Nobody likes me, everybody hates me,
I think I'll go eat worms!
Big fat juicy ones,
Eensie weensy squeensy ones,
See how they wiggle and squirm!
Down goes the first one, down goes the second one,
Oh how they wiggle and squirm!
Up comes the first one, up comes the second one,
Oh how they wiggle and squirm!
I bite off the heads, and suck out the juice,
And throw the skins away!
Nobody knows how fat I grow,
On worms three times a day!
Nobody likes me, everybody hates me,
I think I'll go eat worms!
Big fat juicy ones,
Eensie weensy squeensy ones,
See how they wiggle and squirm!

Yeah, as you get older it gets harder and harder to find new friends and more work to keep existing friends due to varied factors. Illness, moving, kids, and just not liking them anymore tends to thin the herd. I have a bunch of friends but I work hard to maintain those relationships. Someone stated above that his wife was his only remaining friend. That is a dangerous place to be in. Anything can happen on any given day and having others around to support you is essential.

Growing up in a farming community you see old alcoholic farmers all the time. My father in law is one now. I never understood it until I got older and saw what really was happening. They worked their asses off until they retired and now they have few friends, their wives are active but they have their own friends, and they have no hobbies (other than fishing). It is no different than many people I know in the professional world. If something happens to the wife that is all for them as well.

Cultivate friends and actively reach out to find new ones. It is the mantra of getting old.

I think it is more common in the internet age to have fewer or no RL friends as you can get all the social interaction you want without any of the responsibility or commitment. I had no RL friends for the longest time once I graduated college and moved to a new city for work. I couldn't find anyone with similar interests to hang out with on a regular frequent basis. Then I started playing WoW heavily for years which understandably precluded RL friends as well. About a year and a half ago I started swing dancing which has its own local community and made several friends through that involvement. But I still don't have any RL dork/gamer friends besides my wife whom I was lucky to find.

I'm going to a car meet tonight to try to force myself to socialize and see if I can make some friends. Truthfully, I'm not doing to well. I'm full of anxiety and having mild panic attacks. I think I need meds or something

I think that is the wrong way to go about making new friends. Forcing yourself to do something you wouldn't otherwise won't lead to real friends, just more acquaintances. I tried this method for a while by going to meet-up groups and such but it never accomplished anything except to make me feel even more lonely because I always felt like a third wheel.

To make new friends you need to do something you want to and like doing, during the course of which you will eventually become friends with others in the same activity. For me, I started swing dancing. I didn't go to dances and classes as an excuse to meet people, I went because I wanted to learn it for myself, and over time managed to make a bunch of friends.
