If there's a steady paycheck in it, I'll believe anything you want.

It would seem to be inconsistent to be an atheist and yet believe in other unverifiable supernatural phenomena. While only explicitly a statement regarding religion, being an atheist is also an indicator that a person has certain exacting criteria that needs to be met before they will believe something. If religion fails the test, then things like ghosts and karma probably would as well.

There is a huge difference between believing people who tell you supernatural things exist, and actually thinking you saw something supernatural.

A monotheist god as portrayed in abrahamitic religions is actually much more believable than ghosts or other paranormal stuff because it doesn't imply a direct effect on the physical world.

Well said.

I am a militant agnostic and I do not believe in ghosts, Bermudan geometry, or Ancient Aliens.

I do acknowledge that there may well be some type of interconnected, indescribable universal force that does things that we can't understand. Not 'god;' that's too easy/stupid. But I do sometimes see strange coincidence, or experience weird things that I cannot attribute to anything scientific. A good example is people I'm emotionally close to having problems (without me knowing it) and me inexplicably having periods of feeling super-shitty the perfectly coinside with their misery. That has blown my mind a bit on a few occasions.

Actually, even as a kid, I used to think I made shitty things happen to people. I would feel bad right at the time bad shit happened to family members. Which made me terrified of feeling bad.

OP, you just recovered repressed childhood feelings. You asshole.

I can see the ghost part kinda but how is Karma a religious thing?

They are both concepts that are backed by zero evidence just as Christianity is.

And not I don't believe in ludicrous concepts such as God, karma or ghosts.

Ex-girlfriend of mine was an atheist but she was adamant that ghosts existed and that she'd had supernatural experiences. She also believed in ESPN and stuff like that. Strange girl.

KT

I don't believe in ESPN. What a waste of resources paying grown men to play sports. Sports are meant to keep children busy. Grown men should be solving the worlds problems not playing kids games.

Indeed. I've never seen anything I even thought might be supernatural, so I can't comment on that. It's possible that supernatural events are happening to other people all the time. I can't help but notice that all the people who have told me of such events in their own lives also believe in quite a few other improbable things at the same time. Essentially I doubt the veracity of their statements because they have all proved themselves to be too credulous in general to be trusted.

“Live a good life. If there are gods and they are just, then they will not care how devout you have been, but will welcome you based on the virtues you have lived by. If there are gods, but unjust, then you should not want to worship them. If there are no gods, then you will be gone, but will have lived a noble life that will live on in the memories of your loved ones.”

Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able? Then he is not omnipotent. Is he able, but not willing? Then he is malevolent. Is he both able and willing? Then whence cometh evil? Is he neither able nor willing? Then why call him God?

-Epicurus

I argue God is not omnipotent because humans are defined by the evil we encounter; so to remove that evil would be to remove who we are.

Wait, what's the topic?

Ok, yes... so there you go non-thiest but spiritual can exist if you deny an omnipotent God but have experiences with the spiritual.

I have known them. I meet a lot of morons (AKA, the public).

A lot of people believe in bullshit like this:
I believe in karma in the way that negative people attract negative things in their life.

It's just how morons are wired.

Most Atheists believe in things that have evidence. Ghosts, Karma, Astrology, Homeopathic Medicine, and all of other crap out there don't have any real supporting evidence.

I can't speak for everyone, but i would say the vast majority of people who identify themselves as atheists do not believe in any of those things.

I'm a lifelong atheist (no recollection of any time where I believed in god, was baptized catholic but not raised religiously) and I can only truly speak for myself... but I don't believe in any sort of supernatural aspect to reality at all. So, no ghosts, karma, luck, spirits, souls, afterlife, leprechauns, whatever... you name it.

I *believe* that all of my atheist friends are the same way, but I'm reasonably certain that none of them have given it as much thought as I have. None are "devout" atheists in the way I am.

Atheism is more of a rejection of the structure of the supernatural.

It's hard to say the supernatural does NOT exist. Think about all the things that we can prove exist in some form.

Good vs Evil
Of all our matter, our energy and mass can NEVER be destroyed

And the most important of them all:

THERE IS NO SCIENTIFIC EXPLANATION FOR WHAT HAPPENED BEFORE THE BIG BANG. WTF IS THIS MAGICAL UNICORN SHIT THAT SPLODED AND MADE US.

WHERE DID THE MAGICAL UNICORN COME FROM THEN.

AND THEN WHERE IT CAME FROM< WHERE DID IT COME FROM.

etc. etc.

Just look at all those Wiccan hippies. I think they would claim to be atheist (of course, who do they think they're fooling) and yet they sincerely believe in all the weirdest of shits.
Oh well, at least not some guy fucking a virgin, who then gives birth to the guy himself, who's a different guy and then dies and then goes to heaven, where he meets himself, then goes back down and pushes aside a big rock, and disappears.
Because believing in grave robbers is too much of a leap.

I am always extremely surprised how Mary Magdalene is the only person in the world to pull off the immaculate birth. She was a whore too!

NOBODY raised an eyebrow? None of the wisemen were like, , :hmm:

Shit...the fact that nobody actually WROTE about Mary Magdalene being a prostitute, but the fact we still TALK about it like it happened yesterday should be evidence enough!
