My dad is in his late 50's and got laid off last year after the company he worked for for 15 years was bought out. They kept him on during the transition as long as they could, so they say, and let him go in Oct. He found a different job, not nearly as secure for a smaller firm, but he has to travel 4 hours to the site. He stays in a hotel for the week, which sucks for my mom. I feel bad for him having to do so much traveling. He is so ready to just retire.

Yeah, a good friend who got laid off. Did graphic design/layout for many years. Very tough for him, in his mid-50's trying for jobs that people right out of school will do for just over minimum wage.

Sounds kind of like those working in manfacturing. Very tough for those in their fifties who got laid off and are trying to find work that those in China will do for just over slave labour wages.

Hell I know people that are homeless, underemployed, over employed and unemployed. One guy recently quit his job where I work just so he didn't have to pay his ex wife child support. Later he got kicked out from his parents house, gave up the kids he does have custody of to adoption services and is now homeless.

I used to make @ $26.50 an hour doing aerospace work for about a decade, with a lot of OT.

The last 5 year or pretty much BS as far as manufacturing goes, was making $18 an hour last June.

Have been unemployed here awhile now, most of the things I see locally are @ $12 an hour and people fishing for CNC programmers on the cheap.

Unless I want to pick up my almost paid off house and move away from where my wife has a good job all ready, I've just been looking around a bit locally.

I ought to look for some new contacts.

Manufacturing in general sucks badly a lot these days, but I used to do a lot of R&D, and that is a bit of a niche thing.

I have a friend who has been trying to find a job for a while but has trouble. Job market sucks. I keep looking for myself just for fun to see what I could apply to if I lost my job and there is absolutely nothing in tech or closely related. The few jobs I see are minimum wage. Can't live on that. Its scary really and only going to get worse. I need to start looking at a backup plan.

Me too but it got old after the first week and I missed making more than I spent.

Fortunately I have a bit of a buffer still here myself, but I'm not about to start cashing out 401k's etc.

I was always one of those plan ahead type of people, but things still are pretty stupid in general these days.

Well I traveled for a lot of it, so no issues with that. Though by the time December rolled around it did feel like it was time to find a new job.

I know a few family members. And that number probably reflects the people not looking for work.

You should know that if the official unemployment rate is 4.9%, then the real unemployment is around 9.8%%.


And I am one of the involuntary people.
I keep applying for stuff all over Virginia and DC. I rarely get called back and have not been interviewed for over a year.

I have a friend on disability and my 17 year-old daughter is having trouble finding a job aside from camp-counselor for the summer but aside from that don't know anyone not working. (IRL that is ... ATOT does not = real life)

I can't think of anyone that's unemployed and most people I know that are struggling with improving their job situations it's usually their own fault. I could be doing better myself, but I don't blame anything but myself for that. If you're in a highly specialized field where there just aren't that many jobs to begin with, then your situation is different, but that still doesn't stop you from accepting a lesser job that you don't really want.

If I lost my job tomorrow, whether or not I could replace it immediately with something comparable or better might be debatable, but I could definitely walk into any number of less desirable jobs that would still be better than no job at all.

I've moved significant distances and found employment with no plan... Found employment in and out of cities, etc. I think a lot more is within our control than some people are willing to admit. But it's also true that many are simply in quite unfortunate circumstances..

Well yea anyone who hasn't had to look for a job since 2008 is in for a totally different world.

And boy does it bug me having to roll my eyes when they try and give me advice as it falls on totally deaf ears.

Okay person who worked for the same company for 30 years and hasn't ever applied as an external applicant since 1986 tell me more about how easy it is to land a good job when you can't even land a part time job for $12/hr.

I think they know... but just keep trying to keep it moving. A status thing.

I'm over 50 and I have to say the IT job market in Connecticut is not all that great beyond entry-level help-desk stuff. Fortunately I have 17+ years in the transportation business (Courier/Limo) which will never get me ATOT-rich but does serve as backup to pay the bills.

It is more of a disadvantage these days no matter how much experience you have.
