Watch an episode of Cops and you'll wonder if anyone in America, except for the Police, have jobs.

Well, I did quit my job on Aug 31 to move to the other side of the country (planned/notified since April), with the intent of not working for at least 3-4 months.

Unintentionally/stupidly, I somehow managed to get a job about 2 months before I actually moved. :\

But at least I negotiated to only start ~November, and to work part time until this Jan 1st.

Yup, because the Company I work at has had layoffs, esp at the office I work in... A lot of this is straight cutting and some is moving work to cheaper areas. I think they are only getting started too. It's kind of funny if not a bit morbid to look at the org chart and see who else they could cut and/or outsource and get away with it.

BTW, so many job postings these days are fake, even from companies themselves (not even talking about like recruiters), that it's hard to tell whether the people laid off would be able to find something in their field. There seems to be enough retail and grocery stores advertising open positions so they could find something there although obviously that wouldn't pay anywhere near what they would be making for even the lowest end of an office-type job. It's more like an underemployment problem, yeah.

I know lots of unemployed and underemployed people. In fact, if you took out governmental employees, those intentionally self-employed, and housewives/househusbands, nearly every person I know over the age of 50 has been laid off from what appeared to be their lifetime job. The USA has changed a lot little more than a decade. For my parents' generation (WWII vets) to be laid off after age 50 would nearly always involve a criminal arrest, alcoholism drastically affecting job performance or sleeping with the boss's wife. Now it's a matter of downsizing and the corporations who do so are applauded rather than scorned.

True, and no one in power really seems to care. I'm knocking on 50's door and am very concerned. My plan has been to rake in the money in my 40s and then maybe in my early 50s, try to find employment with the state (government, university, etc) in the hopes of having more job security and maybe landing an additional pension.

I've really been thinking about all of this a lot recently, mainly due to my recent job switch. I was a consultant the past 2.5 years and recently went back to working a staff position in a company. After only a few weeks, I'm seriously wondering if I should line up some clients and work for myself. I've been getting a lot of businesses hitting me up for my services and really wonder how well I could do if I devoted myself to it 100%. My wife makes a good living so we could afford to take the shot, but that brings me back to the fact that 50 isn't far off for me - I am 45 years old so striking out on my own is a bit unnerving because once I hit that 50 year-old mark, I'm worried that I may not be able to find another position if needed.

I used to. After some bad experiences, i make a habit of not knowing them.
Of course, in between jobs or just laid off and let go because of spending cuts is something else and not an issue compared to unemployed for a long time (because of personal issues).
