I just read the official unemployment rate is down to 4.9%. I do not know any person who's involuntary unemployed. They're either stay at home moms or retired.

Not off the top of my head. I have a friend who's office is closing in a week or so and moving south, but he immediately found a new gig to stay put. The perks of having a non-worthless degree are nice.

My friend's kid is underemployed, and needs my friend's help. I think there's a lot of people like that, which makes the statistics look better. Shittier jobs/fewer hours than desired, and early retirement. They're technically employed, or "officially" retired, but it isn't what they want.

Yeah, a good friend who got laid off. Did graphic design/layout for many years. Very tough for him, in his mid-50's trying for jobs that people right out of school will do for just over minimum wage.

freelance on the web. we used upwork to find a designer for a mobile app i'm working on and he did a fantastic job. he was doing it just in his spare time too but he made $2000 off of us over a 1.5 month period of time. i know that's not really liveable, but as i said, it was just him doing it in his free time not full time, as he has a full time gig doing it. he lives in europe too and we're in the states (2 on east coast, 1 on west coast) so he doesn't even have to be in the same time zone.

i personally don't know any adults who are not employed that want to be.

Co-workers wife is a stay at home mom. Don't think she wants to work either way. Don't know of anyone else who is unemployed and can't find work. We've interviewed a bunch of people for only a couple positions and some of those people are unemployed.

A friend had a tough time getting a law job, but is now employed. I don't know anyone that is searching but can't find a job.

yes, i know a few old men who got laid off when they were in their 60s and could not get a job and then had to settle for retirement. They would work if someone gave them a chance. But in technology, people rather hire bright young kids out of college.

58% of the patients at the hospital are listed as "Unemployed/Medi-Cal", I suspect that most are just scamming the government. I dont know of anyone personally that wants a job and cant get one.

Yeah... I don't think that counts as "unemployed"

I know several that are between employment currently, but statistically they likely count as retired even if only until their next job. None were involuntary though.

I know quite a few people that are unemployed, and quite a few more that are underemployed.

A friend of mine is a CPA and has been working temp jobs on and off, but can't seem to find a full time job. I think it is because she has a chronic illness and no workplace wants to take a risk on her being out.

Another friend is a MBA and can't seem to find a job. He is competent and seems to be trying, but his wife passed away 2 years ago leaving him the single parent of 5 kids, and you can't have a 10 minute conversation with him with out it being obvious that he is deeply depressed. Once again, I just don't think any company wants to hire someone with such obvious problems.

I have another friend that is a programmer that recently got laid off (the company was a startup that is going under) and I'm sure she will get a new job soon, but technically she has been unemployed for a few weeks now as she does the interviewing process.

I know another couple that just has no applicable skills and no work ethic. Neither of them have more than a 9th grade education. They each have been fired from every job that they have ever had because they just can't seem to understand that when working a entry level retail job if you don't go in every day, especially in those first few months, they fire you.

I have a buddy who is chronically unemployed, but that's more a function of his tendency to blow up anytime someone suggests something might be his fault. Flip out and quits or flips out and get fired.

Location is a big factor in unemployment. Not many unemployed in my area, although every time I watch Judge Judy it seems like everyone on the show is unemployed.
