the rest of the US is a republic, should our voting be different?

that being said, I don't have an issue with the idea of an electoral college, my problem is that the one we have now has become incapable of accuratley representing the opinion of the US.

Do you "one person, one vote" people have any idea what kind of imbalance would be affected by the largest urban areas on the rest of the country?

I hope you idiots know that if this were the case, the candidates wouldn't care about 75% of the country.

Do you even know what the purpose of the electoral college is?

if i was in a state and voted for a differant candidate than what the majority of the people in my state voted for, then my vote would be null and it would go toward the opposing candidate (because i help determine the states representation becasue i am a citizen of a certain state)

I still hold that the majority of the American population doesn't take the time to get informed and, therefore; doesn't deserve an equal vote. I fear the stupidity of the masses without an Electoral College.

yes, it is an essential part of our republic

when the liberals remove it, all will be lost. it will be mob rule , the tyranny of the majority that Jefferson warned us of will become a reality and the United States will cease to exist

the electoral college is critical to the stability of the country

if it was direct vote, no one in washington would care about anything outside of the big cities in NY, Florida, Texas and California

and if people don't feel like they can get their concerns addressed through political means, then they will turn to other tactics that might not be so pleasant . . .

yes, such a system might result in Iowa getting more than it's 'fair share', but still it's entire share compared to say California is so miniscule that it's a reasonable price to pay for the stability of the country

The least that needs to happen is
a) redistricting put into the hands of an independent commision (IO style)
b) electoral votes split (CO style).

the two parties would become even closer to the middle than they are now. the candidates would only campaign on the the coasts, only in the largest cities. they wouldn't bother visiting 40-45 of the states at all, let alone smaller towns. the media spend would increase even more than it is now. all the candidate would need to do is get a few of the largest urban areas to vote for them and they would win. the interests of rural america would get flushed down the crapper

Exactly.

People hashed this long ago that were smarter than me and this is what they came up with. It works better then any other system.

As it is they don't give a damn about most of the country anyway. Only a few "swing states". If your state isn't on the fence, you won't be hearing from either side.

I'd like to at least see the electoral votes awarded proportionally instead of winner take all.

split votes along party lines would still bascially destroy the system. there is a reason no one visits maine.

and where would one find this mythical creature? no one is independent.

Now you need an independent commission to determine who should be on the independent commission.

b) electoral votes split (CO style).

totally destroy the purpose of the electoral college, might as well go to direct vote

by dividing (for example) Colorado's vote, you effectively make the concerns of Colorado irrelevant to the election as at most campaigning there is only going to net you 1-2 extra electoral votes instead of the whole shebang
