Flying is exciting when you are going somewhere fun.
I'm not afraid of it, but I don't particularly enjoy it either. I can't sleep on a plane, no matter how tired I am. And I hate sitting for hours in an uncomfortable seat. The one time I flew first class was for a job interview (only one leg, because the rest of the flight was booked) and it was much nicer. But it's still not worth an extra $500 for me to be more comfortable for a couple hours.

Oh, if you add "on Canadair Regional Jets" to the question, my answer changes to "I ABSOLUTELY DESPISE FLYING".
I seriously think the people who designed those things were sadistic bastards.

Any of the regionals are pretty iffy. I am looking at a flight to Iowa right now and a leg is on a Saab 340 with 16" seat and 30" pitch, which is at least a full inch on either measurement lower than a normal jet.

The odds of dying via plane crash are pretty damn low to begin with, I'm in more danger driving in my car or walking down the street (Chicago drivers...*cringe*). Anyway if it's going down there is a pretty decent chance everyone on board is going to die anyway so why not have a comfy seat.

Ratio wise, yes there are alot more cars than planes so you are much more likely to die in a car crash. I like being in control though.

I don't think a major US carrier has had a severe crash since that American Airlines A300 got it's tail torn off and crashed in Queens back in 01 I think. I remember it since it was not to long after 9/11.

Correct, that was a pretty bad one, though.

exact same case with me. Can't fall asleep regardless of how tired i am. Hate it when others are sound asleep and wake up fresh (sort of) just in time for the next meal and here I am feeling all tired and cranky in my uncomfortable seat.

On long flights, nothing gets me more tired than not having to lie down for hours and hours. flat beds for everyone in economy class damn it!

The CRJ's are the only one's I've been on in the past few years. There is so little space that I could barely read a book. And the window seats are the worst. The curve of the plane takes away any shoulder room. But the worst part for me is the seat cushions that seem to consist of a piece of plywood wrapped in fabric.

Not a big fan of it myself. I still have problems with air pressure and my ears during the descent of longer flights (altitudes of 35-40K feet). They don't always pop so sometimes it hurts like a mother.

I'm scared to fly on smaller commuter jets after a bad experience on one.

It seems like every time I turn on the news an airliner has gone down with 200-300 people somewhere else in the world, our accident rate seems very low comparatively. Makes me a tad reluctant to shy away from the US majors.

I hate flying, the whole experience bugs me, from the moment I walk into an airport to the moment the plane takes off.

I like driving and if I can I will drive.

I've always felt sorry for tall/large people who have to get on those things. It even feelts tight to me at 5'5" and 140lbs. Thankfully my flights on them have always been only about 30 minutes.

doesn't bother me. definitely don't enjoy the stuffy cabin and leg room that is only substantial for a 4'11" Chinese woman. I actually enjoy take off. it feels like a ride at an amusement park. although that is the most dangerous tmie of flight.

You are going to Phoenix...in the summer....for a vacation? Do you jam needles under your fingernails for fun in your spare time?

Sometimes when I feel like I'm a few feet off the ground, my stomach kind of drops.

Not to mention the quarter-sized overhead storage space. I have a medium-sized backup that I always carry with me when I travel that holds my laptop, hard drive, and camera gear... and it NEVER fits in those bins. I have to remove my laptop in order for it to fit, and of course, there really is no room to work on a laptop, so that does me a lot of good. Damn you, Canadair!

As for flying commercially, I hate it. Commercial air travel has no redeeming qualities today, as far as I am concerned. However, I am not afraid to fly. In fact, I love the turbulence and any other exciting pitching/yawing that may occur. Private jets are great, and I am sure that being a pilot would be a lot of fun.

Never piloted a plane, but looks fun as hell. I actually enjoyed violent turbulence once, until the guy next to me threw up in my direction.

But it's a dry heat.

So that 110 really only feels like 100

EagleKeeper: I am a third generation pilot. Both my father and grandfather were US Army pilots before my private stint.

The "Edwin L. Powell" mention in this document is my late grandfather

Those 30 minute flights are what they were really designed for. Unfortunately, lots of carriers began flying them on longer and longer flights. The last one I took was a 2.5 hr flight. I guess by "regional", they mean 1/2 the country.

Yes, but because it means I'm going somewhere. The flying itself can freak me out at times, usually only when I'm watching the engine bounce up and down. Then there was that Vietnam Airlines with a propeller engine I flew in.. the runway had cracks with grass growing out and I'd never flown in a propeller plane before. I didn't like the feeling that if those things stopped spinning, I would die.

I love flying.

You need to understand that an airplane is a very strong and fairly robust piece of machinery.

Statistically speaking it is the safest mode of transportation.
