I saw this bit of info on the PBS Newshour tonight. I know with our economy changing many are forced to work jobs they do not like, and efficiency experts are turning previously pride-worthy positions into crappy ones. Any of you in that boat?

Mostly yes. I like it well enough that if I won the lottery I would still work at the same job, just maybe one or two days per week less often. I think that qualifies as being a job that I like.

Efficiencies are best... I was told so in P&N

Free Trade is best because it brings more efficiencies...

people should stop complaining, and be happy their jobs are being streamlined by efficiency experts

I love my job, but at the end of the day it's still something I do because I need money to live. I could not really ask for better though. I work at a NOC, good pay, and very cushy. Shift work is awesome too. I hope I can keep this job for as long as possible as I'd hate to go back to an 8-5 job, that and there arn't many technical jobs here that pay as good as this one.

There are less than stellar days, and I worry about that longevity of the industry... But overall I like it

Although sometimes it is not easy to solve problems. And i feel particularly bad (up to the point of hardly getting any sleep) when i made a design error or an error in a library component, i do like my job. It never gets boring. And when i am able to understand after measuring and deducing, and to solve the problem it really is a huge braingasm and relief. :awe:
Like wanting the champagne and the women.

I like working on the same location. Locating around i hate.

edit :
And it is really nice to be able to discuss with colleagues a problem and solve it.
Not being alone in solving a problem can really help sometimes.
Although, when i am working my way in a methodological manner to a solution... I prefer to work alone.
When i run out of ideas, i like to talk to people for fresh input and search the local information library or the internet.

I used to love it, now they changed me to a new role in the past few weeks. Deciding if I will try to move, try to learn to like my new position, or find another company altogether.

I just got a new boss. Before, I would have said that my job was ok most of the time. Now? I've never been under stress like this. You can never do ANYTHING right with him. Daily 'counseling' sessions even for the most minor of mistakes that are easily corrected. And I mean minor - like mistyping a number or a word. Last minute mandatory overtime, working through weekends... and as salaried exempt you have nothing you can say about it when they tell you on Friday that you're working both days on the weekend, and have to be in early Monday to cover a colleague on vacation. Of course before this boss we never needed to cover each other - believe me when I say that the business does not need us there all the time to function. Total nightmare, but you can't walk away from 6 figures, a 401k, and a full pension. You can only hope that you outlast him and that the new guy will be more reasonably.

I like my job for the fact that enables me to live a good and stable life.

But at the end of the job, it's a job. One is not suppose to like it, that's why it's called a job.

I also don't believe in such a thing as a dream job. I don't think there has ever been ANY activity that I love, that didn't get boring or old after doing it for extended periods of time.

I also have never met a person that woke up on Monday morning and said "I can't wait to get to work".

Hope you understand

Sad outlook, maybe because you gave up trying. I've had positions where I loved working and couldn't wait to get to work, but in general there is a balance to it of a love hate type thing.

yes the actual work I do is exactly what I want to be doing and I'm at home... pay and company morale aren't so great.

You use the word job. Many have a career. A career is a long journey with "jobs" being stops along the way. Sometimes those stops are the equivalent of beat up and abused truck stop restroom that looks like a crime scene happened at. Other times they are scenic bypasses that you stop at and admire the awesomness of things. Not all of them are going to be good. Not all are going to be bad. But you keep your head down and moving forward.

Depends how far into the six figures it is, but I'd certainly consider walking away from such shit.

Yes and no, I like what I do and left alone to do it I would be fine. Unfortunately being a government job I carry a lot of dead weight along with me and deal with idiocy when it comes to supervisors and the evaluation process. Their current pet system is SMART goals and PGP which take bureaucratic paperwork to an entirely new level. On the other hand being government means ignoring the stupidity and doing what you need to do anyway has very little consequence other than lots of babble that is easily ignored.

It's easy to say over the internet, but I'm old enough now that I just don't put up with that. I don't do micromanagement, and I don't put in long hours for the sake of long hours. If it's an implementation weekend that's one thing. But I'm not working just to crank out a few more widgets or push some more reports. There will just be more after that. Put in my 40 and head out. It takes a ton of time, money and effort to fill most above-entry level positions with competent people. If you are a decent employee do your salaried work and get out of the office. Call their bluff.

In my current job I can work things mostly how I want and have a decent job, but I just have so much manufactured drama raining down non-stop from all levels of management that it's practically impossible to sit down on any given day and do work. One day it's the right way. The next day it's the wrong way. Just a non-stop chain of kneejerking and bullshit. There's legitimate work to be done and rewarding work at that...but the egos and decisions made out of paranoia at exec levels. Uuuuhhhhgggg. I'm tapping out when I can.

I enjoy the kind of work that I do that I sometime don't mind putting in extra overtime or research on my own time. As far as the job and the people...meh, I've worked with better team and better companies. Feel like it's too late in my career now to start over with a new company because part of the job requires really good understanding of company infrastructure, policies, establishing your credential, and people rapport that can take years to build. I suspect some people in the team may feel the same that if we're offered the same kind of work and environment but with more money, we'd pop smoke.
