This thread reminds me of something I read somewhere that a person is three things, what they think they are, what others think they are and what they really are. But consider the implications. If a person is who he thinks he is but is really who they really are, then who we think we are can’t be who we really are or we don’t actually have three identities. Similarly, if who others say we are is not who we are then the idea that we have a third identity could only be discovered and known to people from an unknown dimension.

If you read the thread, for example, you see it is all about how we see ourselves or how others see us, nothing about how we really are being an issue until now perhaps.

I hear in this thread a deep existential suffering that I am familiar with, that drove me to seek deeper understanding. I was trapped in a certainty that because of my need for some truth to make me feel good about life, and my failure to find it that I would never again know happiness. I found this Zen koan and it saved my life:

Once upon a time, as a man was walking through a forest, he saw a tiger peering out at him from the underbrush. As the man turned to run, he heard the tiger spring after him to give chase.

Barely ahead of the tiger, running for his life, our hero came to the edge of a steep cliff. Clinging onto a strong vine, the man climbed over the cliff edge just as the tiger was about to pounce.

Hanging over the side of the cliff, with the hungry tiger pacing above him, the man looked down and was dismayed to see another tiger, stalking the ravine far below. Just then, a tiny mouse darted out from a crack in the cliff face above him and began to gnaw at the vine.

I have seen some explanations for what this koan is supposed to mean, as if it were intended to be amenable to rational thinking rather than to joy beyond conception or the self that is real.

If you seek the truth from a Zen master I am told, if he sees you have a stick he well give you one and if you don’t have one he will take it away.

If you seek a way out of a prison the door will always be 180 degrees from where you look. Who is the seeker? How is it that to seek is to find while what is sought after can’t be found?

The finger pointing at the moon is not the moon.

The truth can’t be poured into a full tea cup.

—————————-

When I was first exposed to these ideas and more like them from Zen traditional literature and while in a pit black hopelessness and despair, having lost all my naive dreams there was anything meaningful that could be shown to be so anywhere, I felt massive blind rage.

“Now now Moonbeam, you know you are not supposed to get angry”, the voices in my head told me, but I know what good that advise did for me. Don’t be like Gulliver and let the voices of Lilliputians tie you down.

To seek the truth is to seek it out of ego need which means it remains hidden. To surrender in defeat puts you in the road where Grace can run you over. Grace is a mystery you may believe does not exist, but whatever you believe if you let it go Grace will not deny you. But don't forget that if the ego seeks a reward for modesty it will only be modesty as a pretense to achieve an ego goal. 180 from where you look remember.

I've grown to like me. I am exceedingly hard on myself, which spirals downward into self-loathing at times, but I think I am generally an easy person to get along with, treat people well, very useful, and do a good job at anything I put effort towards.
I saw past those things that made you feel that way a long time ago.

I saw as far as 'three things' and scrolled past the rest.
Just as you scrolled right past the realization that because you never received the proper support for being nice you turned your attention to proving them right by attempting to become a world class asshole. Try to remember that you are one of the greatest of viruses and lacking in awareness of the damage you, a state you relish obviously, but all the while completely insignificant.

My, my, what a pile of horse shit. Far from insignificant, your bothering to tell me how insignificant I am just screams your own self importance but, of course, only to you. What I said was that read what I wrote or not, to the self important it would all have the same outcome, ignored.

you know, Moonbeam's posts always take an extra reading or two for me. and sometimes i still don't understand. but i don't think being so dismissive of someone else who makes you think more than others might, is the answer.
i may not understand a lot of Moonbeam's thoughts, and those that i do, i do not always agree with, but i appreciate the mental challenge and journey.

Moonbeam means well and intentions DO matter.

(also provoking thought = a plus in my world!)

What I find interesting/curious about this place (by which I mainly mean OT and P&N) is that I find a large number of posters annoying, but in no two cases is it for the same reasons (even with politics there aren't just two 'sides', more like as many different ideological positions as there are posters).

It's different in real life, but, at least at the superficial level of a forum, you don't have to like someone to find something useful or interesting in interacting with them.

Add in the tech forums as well, and I'm 100% with you.

All we have in those areas now are either "my pc restarted one time, is something wrong with it" or "I'm too lazy to read a review, build my PC" posts.

I think the forums, for the most part, is circling the drain and what's left is mostly muck. Don't get me wrong, there are still some reasonable posters here, but they are beginning to say "fuck that noise" and moving on. Oh well, ATOT had a good run compared to many of the message boards that started around the same period.

Moving on to what, Reddit? Fuck, you want to talk about a load of annoying posters...

Not for me.

I think when my time at Anandtech is done, I'll simply be done with being a registered user on any forum. I guess I would simply "retire" in a sense.

At this point in my life, I just don't see any benefit to starting over on / continuing to another forum style website.

I'm currently on at least a dozen forums to one degree or another, maybe more. I've kind of lost count of some I don't use as much. Most are topic specific rather than general, so there isn't much off topic stuff.

I could never figure out the comment flow on the Redd place, so I have no idea who is responding to who.

idk, i just join subreddits for things i am interested in, and there just isnt a lot of annoyingness for me on reddit. if you go to AITA or TIFU or other big, more popular subreddits, then yeah, it can be annoying, but i just dont go to those places, lol. but i would not say its any more annoying than here. as with most online places these days, curation is key.

Beyond browsing selected subreddits, I also browse /all because other than ATOT (sadly) that's my primary exposure to "mainstream" culture, and there can be value in knowing what those people are up to

Yeah, I'm on separate forums for a couple musical instruments, a car-specific forum, etc. They usually have an off topic section too, but I seem to not generally relate to those people enough for it to be engaging.

I will be starting a forum at some point myself actually. Well, it's been a decade + procrastination project in process, basically I used to run a forum called iceteks.com. That's my first ever site, started in early 2000's. At some point someone gave me anythingforums.com as I was a mod there and the owner didn't feel like running it anymore. Lot of members from there also posted at Iceteks. At some point I started a UO server so another forum was at uovalor.com. Then I also got uogateway.com. 4 forums was a bit much to run, the older ones got hacked due to being outdated but had so many customizations it was easier said than done to just update. So I shut them down temporarily until I can fix them and what turned into a few months turned to years and now a decade... They were mostly dead anyway.

Long story short goal is to combine all 4 forums into one and relaunch. Will be at https://www.anyf.ca and https://www.anythingforums.ca. The other domains will just redirect. So like if you try to go to an old topic it will redirect to new one. I'm doing this in such a way that if somehow, there are still links to posts on other forum/sites they will actually work.

Funny thing is I was very close to having it all working but then I had a server incident on my main web server around this Christmas and when setting up a new server with a newer more up to date OS the new forum was already too outdated to run on it. New php version, new mysql etc. Lot of stuff didn't work. So now I'm basically doing everything over again but on a newer platform. This is starting to sound like Duke Nukem Forever.

Recently got diagnosed with a Morton Syndrome which limits my mobility though so I've actually been putting more time into it instead of doing projects around the house or doing exercise etc. Silver lining I guess. I recently went to the doctor for follow up on that and I'm somehow still 150 lbs. Zero exercise in over a month now and didn't gain weight, I don't know how, but I'll take it lol.
