Meh. I loved the thrash bands of the 80s and early 90s. Now it all sounds like one guy screaming while another does unspeakable things to a drumset. Where did the melody and intelligible lyrics go?

Most of the bands with musical talent and creativity get pushed to the back for dumb ass "mainstream" bands (I hate to use that word)

Listen to some protest the hero (first CD specifically). Oozing with musical talent, very creative, and interesting vocals (mostly sung, fairly understandable but fast)

I don't like outright screaming and bitching of typical death metal.

I like metal with a talented progressive twist. I'm a big fan of Opeth & Arch Enemy. I do need more recommendation along that road,

You don't like outright screaming, but you do like Arch Enemy?? Angela Gossow has got to be the most intense in the industry as far as screaming is concerned. You should try The Absence, specifically riders of the plague album. It has to be the best melodic death metal I have ever heard from an American band.

I prefer Krysta Cameron. 1/3 growl, 1/3 scream, 1/3 clean

I'm a big gothic/symphonic/power metal fan with some black and thrash on the side.

Favorite bands are Nightwish, Epica, Within Temptation, Tristania, Midnattsol, Amberian dawn, Hammerfall, dimmu borgir....

Extreme vocals take some getting used to for most people. Rarely(in my experience) does anyone just "fall in love" with the growling you see in death metal or the shriek in black metal. The way I ended up appreciating these kind of vocals was through listening to bands like Nightwish and then I ended up listening to earlier albums of bands who had ditched the "beauty and the beast" style volcals but had that in their early albums(like Within Temptation's Enter).

But even though what I usually listen to tends to be in the 50/50 clean/extreme type vocals I can't stand listening to non stop screaming and growling. It's really not for everyone...

i agree here i really have to be in the mood to listen to a lot of either type and it doesn't happen often. theres only so much Dimmu or Amarth that i can listen too at one time where i can listen to Sabaton, Blind Guardian or In Flames forever. For me pure growl/scream has to have the music behind it to back it up and sadly a lot of it does not

Not sure how Arch Enemy is progressive, but if you like them you'd probably like most melodic death metal, including:

In Flames (newer stuff is kind of iffy, but old stuff is great)
Dark Tranquillity
Insomnium
At The Gates (Slaughter of the Soul particularly)
Eucharist
Soilwork
Mors Principium Est
Scar Symmetry
The Absence
The Haunted
Wintersun

Insomnium and Wintersun have some progressive influence so you'd probably like those the most if thats actually what you're looking for. The rest are just like Arch Enemy.

edit: Didn't see someone else had reccomended The Absence already. I saw them open for Amon Amarth and they were awesome.

Hell yes. Traditional/power (Fates Warning, Metal Church, etc; none of this flowery Euro-power crap) and thrash are probably my two favorite sub-genres, but I like most things pre-1994. Meshuggah and The Lord Weird Slough Feg are really great on the newer side of things.

Listening to Overkill's Birth of Tension right now, btw.

thrash metal: dark angel, morbid saint, vektor

Yeeeeeeeeesssssssss.

Well what I meant was, AE throws a couple of good interludes and catchy melodic breaks, riffs, & solos in there.

Compare that to like.. Lamb of God- just screaming 'WEAREHARDCORECONSTANTTHROWINGNOTESEVERYWHERE' madness.

Anyone who likes Overkill is a friend of mine.

I don't care too much for euro-weenie metal myself either.

I grew up on Slayer, Metallica, Exodus, Testament, Pantera, etc.

I really don't find too much new stuff that I like at all. Lamb of God is OK. I mostly still buy stuff that those tired old bands that I listed put out. :<

Speaking of that.....these guys still do kick ass, I don't care who you are:

It's all about the Edguy and Avantasia... along with some Sonata Arctica, Blind Guardian, Iced Earth, and of course Demons and Wizards...

As you can tell, I love my power metals..

Lately I've been listening to Baroness, Opeth, Mastodon, The Sword, Gojira, and Daylight Dies; Porcupine Tree and Thrice are regulars as well, but not really metal.
