I dont like it. I used to do it but I felt like everybody was staring. I was reading the paper, drinking a beer and chomping on burger. Oh well.

Never tried it. Way to weird. I can't even eat at McDonald's by myself. I will just get it to go and eat in my car. Maybe it is some sort of dependency phobia. I better sue my parents.

I have to travel for work and when that happens I'm often eating alone. I will not eat in a restaurant by myself unless I have a book to read, and even then I can barely stand it.

My boss likes it though, since my expense account usually has a $6 dinner (courtesy of some fast food place) instead of the $25 nice restaurant dinner that most people get when traveling.

Just did this for the first time, twice last week. Don't like it! Took a paper both times. I think the waitresses feel sorry for you too. I REALLY HATE service work! I'm going to apply for a job at Walmart or something...

I guess one of the whole reasons for going out to eat dinner is to talk with the people you go with. I tried going on my own once and it ruined the whole thing.

You must have been a really boring dinner date for yourself.

I don't like it, but don't have anyone to go with right now either.

I wouldn't mind. I'm polite. I treat my waiter/waitress nice and don't give much care to other patrons. I'm there to eat my favorite meal not there to care about what they think. I like absolute silence while eating my meals, I want to enjoy it. I hate people who keep starting conversation while I'm eating. Also, I almost always pay when I go eat-out no matter who is with me so financially it also helps a bit not having to pay for other people all the time.

well, your last problem is easily resolved by just not paying for other people

anyways, i don't mind a quiet little meal, it makes me feel quaint.

You can always stand up after you get the main course, scream, stab it with your fork, look horified, and then sit back down to eat.

You'll still be alone, but at least you'll be the center of attention.

I'm in Ohio over the summer visiting my cousins and taking a class at osu so I eat alone during the day a lot. I got used to it, its not that bad. Its eating....no big deal. But I have to be reading a paper or a book or something, otherwise I feel really strange hehe.

I've done it many times during a semester. I don't usually have the time to fix food and such, so it's much easier being served. I always bring books or notes to read. I can kill two birds with one stone - eating and studying.

The waitresses are always very nice to me. Is it because I'm quiet and polite, or is it because they pity me?

No - If you travel for business, it's that or eating in your hotel room.

If it is a bar/restaurant, you can even meet road whores!

When I go out to eat it's because I'm hungry, not because I want to make inane small talk with someone. You can talk anywhere, why do you have to talk while eating, chewing extra fast in order to answer a question or make a comment and, last, spraying your food on other people. I enjoy eating while reading a book or newspaper.

I have no problem eating breakfast and lunch alone at a restaurant, but dinner's a bit weird unless you're at a hotel restaurant near the airport where everyone does it.

I used to spend over 4 months a year on the road by myself. Eating alone in a restaurant was never a problem. I sometimes took a report to review or book but most of the time I'd rather just sit there and look around at the place. Some restaurants have friendlier wait staff. If I really felt like I wanted company, I just ate at the bar. I've gotten more dates (during my trips) from restaurants than any other place including a plain old bar.
