Hi .

I have a 5950Ultra 256mb.

Do you guys overclock your cards??

If i am considering serious oc, should i get a GPU cooler??

Can you recommend a good brand/s.

Benchmarking and stress testing to see how far it can go other than that I leave it at stock since it's fast enough as is.

In my own experience with oc'ing my sapphire 9600xt it just wasn't worth it. I ran benches at stock settings and a fairly high overclock and only saw a difference of 2-3fps. I just set it back to the original settings and left it be.

8500 LE 128 MB Overclocked about 10% and stable. I think there is some improvement in games, so I leave it there.

no.

Too much work.
Risking an expensive investment.
Little performance gained.
Overclocking - another word for stealing.

I don't bother overclocking GPUs. Usually the gain is only negligable and you're needlessly risking the card.

Even though I typically run a moderate overclock on my CPU, I too never thought the meager returns from overclocking a GPU were worth the risks.
That was until I bought my Sapphire 9800NP for the expressed purpose of flashing it to a 9800 Pro. But, after flashing it to Pro, I still run it at stock Pro speeds...

I most definately do. nVidia's reference design heatsink/fan is VERY good. I'm running 490/940 (stock for my FX5900 is 400/850) and the temp NEVER gets above 60 C.

i agree. i've tried but i really didn't see much of a difference or that much gain in performance when playing games so i just run at stock speeds. i've read other people's experiences where they overclocked and damaged their cards. i see a much bigger performance gain by just overclocking my cpu instead. it's also cheaper to replace a cpu than a $300+ graphics card in case something goes wrong.

ive got my 5700u at 525/950, and it's a pretty decent card, I could push it a lot more than that, but im just bein conservative.

Stealing? We bought the card, we can do what we want to it, if you can get free power, why not? I could set my card on fire and spit on it, its mine

Tabb, add this one to the VIAN hall of fame. I believe this may well be the stupidest thing he's ever said.

Fortunately for you guys, there is no law against it. I take back what I said about stealing.

Overclocking is becoming less risky though, because of the integrated heat sensors that slow down the core when it gets too hot.

But that doesn't mean that we still don't have to pay for the company's losses.

I overclocked once just for the same of benchmarking,
and then changed to stock speeds ... coz I felt I dont need to OC it when it performed flawlessly for my needs

I wouldn't o/c if you're satisfied with the perf. you get. Getting 5 extra fps may not be noticeable, and you push it too hard, you'll lose in stability.

WTF.....Overclocking does not equal burning up your card and then rmaing it. If you want to say rmaing a burnt up card is another word for stealing, fine. But there is nothing wrong or illegal about simply overclocking a card, especially when you have companies shipping their cards with overclocking software.
