I have a 32" Toshiba HDTV (1080i, 4:3 screen). Got it in November 2001.

HDTV is nice, but some DTV stations SRA. They'll display older NTSC content in "stretchy-vision", scaling the 4:3 content to something like 4.5:3. Makes everyone look like Kirstie Alley (fat!).

I also hear rumours that DirecTV is going to upgrade all broadcasts to MPEG4. They currently use MPEG2. So, you'll need to upgrade your HDTV receiver. Of course, they don't mention if they'll upgrade it for free or not.

46 inches of widescreen bliss. I don't get the HDTV service, not enough channels yet to make it worth it, but DVDs look AWESOME.

Do you mean "HDTV" or "HD-Ready TV"?

"HDTV" would imply a display capable of recieving HDTV signals, either with a built-in or external tuner, and HDTV service (cable, DISH, OTA).

"HD-Ready TV" would imply a display capable of recieving HDTV signals, but no tuner or service.

For example, a 2405FPW would be considered a "HD-Ready TV" if you didn't have a tuner or signal source.

BTW, my setup is a Sony 30HS420 + Comcast Dual-Tuner HD-DVR.

Yup.

Sony 57" CRT RPTV. Had it almost 3 years now. OTA Tuner built in and have an antenna in the attic to pick up the HD signals. Also recently got HD via Cox cable with the HD-DVR. Progressive scan DVD and component hookups to the XBox.

Does Dell 2405fpw count? If so, I've joined the party.

However my non-technophile parents won't be getting an HDTV for another 5 years at least (when they need to replace their little 32" CRT).

Yep, we have a 30" widescreen Sony KV-30HS510 CRT with Comcast HD service (and HD premium movie channels) running over DVI. Although this sucker is ~260lbs, you still cannot beat CRT black level performance. Loving it!

And I thought I was the only one with an old a$$ Sony tube. They are built like tanks.
Nope, you're not the only one. My 35" Sony from about '90 died in 06/04 which is why I got my new Sony 50".

Yup, a 30" Samsung CRT HDTV W/DVI

The picture is great, if only there was better support for it connected to PC's.

Peace!
