HP DL380 G5 w/ dual Xeon X5460 (3.16 GHz) - 8 GB RAM (16 GB mirrored) - 6x 72 GB SAS drives (RAID5) and an AMD low grade GPU (no fan) to run the old 21" CRT for when I need to check on it. Fedora 20 w/ XFCE.

Keep that old iron running!

My main desktop is a Xeon X5650 (4.2 GHz oc) on an Asrock X58 Extreme6 w/ 12 GB HyperX RAM, Windforce 280X and too freaking many drives to list. Dual boot Win 7 Pro and Fedora 20 w/ KDE. Daughter runs a dual boot similar to mine except for X58 Deluxe board, same dual boot as mine.

integrated HD 7660D graphics
128GB Samsung 840
With the low profile Noctua cooler and PicoPsu, this rig is very close to silent.
Mint 17.1 KDE

Used mostly for web surfing and free games. I run WinXP in VirtualBox for my tax software and my older games.

I have used Linux as my main desktop OS for many years now. I use Win7 to play games like Guild Wars 2 though.

I upgraded from a Core2 Q8200 @ 2.8GHz / 8GB DDR2 800MHz RAM on an Asus P5K-VM motherboard to an AMD FX-8320 @ 4GHz / 8GB DDR3 2133MHz on an Asus M5A97 R2.0 motherboard back in late 2013. I kept the same GTS450 through the upgrade, but eventually upgraded the video card to an AMD R9 270.

In terms of cpu usage the upgrade more than doubled my compile time with gcc and transcoding with Handbrake is much faster as well. Windows games run way better with the FX-8320, but I haven't played any cpu intensive games in Linux to say with certainty that it is better in Linux games (though one would assume so).

I am using PCLinuxOS and my kids are using Mint 17 on the old computer (with a Ati 5670 video card rather than the GTS450 - why waste the electricity!). Really great experience on both machines in Linux.

xUbuntu 14.04 on a Lenovo x131e netbook. (E-1200, 4GB / 320GB, 11" 13xx * 768 screen, etc.)

It's slow, but it's got some nice features, a decent keyboard and trackpoint (for a cheap netbook) and it runs my CNC machine just fine.

I find it interesting how many AMD users have a dedicated box for Linux.
I had an AMD GPU on my Linux workstation. Even though I didn't do any 3D it leaked memory at a huge speed, resulting in saturation of the 32 GB RAM and the X server being killed automatically. I asked the graphics card to be replaced by an NVIDIA one, everything works fine now. I was told by many that AMD under Linux is horrible, and I can confirm it with first hand experience now

"Server"
Ubuntu 14.04
C2Q 9300
AMD HD6870
8GB 1066 DDR2 Memory

"Resurrection"
Lubuntu 14.04
Pentium 4 530 (Prescott)
Nvidia 7800GT
1GB 400 DDR Memory

"Worker (laptop)"
Fedora 21
Core i5 2540m
HD3000 (GT2+)
4GB DDR3 Memory

AMD linux drivers have improved a lot over the past year. They work pretty well now, imo. Hopefully with Vulkan + the new development cycles things become even better. Nvidia isn't exactly problem free on linux either. Intel tends to have the best linux drivers but obviously 3d performance isn't really viable for gaming.

Debian Wheezy
Athlon 5350
8GB DDR3-1866 ECC

HTPC
Ubuntu 14.04
Intel G3258
AMD Radeon HD 6850
8GB DDR3-1866

Work Desktop (Linux)
Ubuntu 14.04
Intel E4600
2GB DDR2-800

Also have a Windows machine at work (Intel quad) and at home (AMD octo). I asked the company for another 2GB of ram for my work desktop, and they bought the Intel quad PC instead. So now I have a dedicated Windows PC (instead of a VM) to run Outlook. v0v

Also, confirming the proprietary AMD drivers are terrible. The open-source drivers are slower, but at least they work.

Welcome to 2003 when nVidia rules the driver scene... It's a pity so many people keep re-using these kinda speels in an attempt to have an opinion.

I'm not surprised at the proportionally larger AMD scene in Linux considering the generally older demographic, computer literacy, and the open source mindset.

Yeah, my issues with AMD drivers are made up, I have an agenda to prove NVIDIA is better.

I am most likely older than most here and have used open source SW for 25 years with Linux my main OS for almost 20 years. So please, educate me.

Funny.

Well, my reason is that I was very price conscious. If I don't "game," then why should I pay ~$100 for an operating system?
And since gaming and Linux don't mesh that well (yet), many of the arguments in this forum describing Intel > AMD simply don't apply.

You said AMD under Linux is horrible. This is a gross generalization reliant on a single user experience and the herd mindset. I will educate you on objectivity if you need it, but from a technical/scientific sense you are unequiped to make that decision. Plenty of others are happy.

I am most likely older than most here and have used open source SW for 25 years with Linux my main OS for almost 20 years. So please, educate me.

Yes... You're part of the "older" demographic... A slightly higher percentage which uses Linux... As am I... Solid point.

I used to dual boot various distros of Linux for years for the purpose of maintaining some *NIX* programming skills - but I haven't done that for a number of years now.

Although the poll states "desktop" I still voted "yes" for my server. I run a server for torrents, DLNA streaming, and local back-ups. I'm hoping to add a Crashplan server for my parents shortly.
