Why are you guys talking about fuel efficiency? It's not really part of the question, and a V-8 does not necessarily mean bad fuel economy. Suppose it's a 1.0L turbo diesel V-8 hybrid in a 1500 lbs. car.

I prefer it, but my wallet is getting sucked dry. Of course this is 1987 technology, which isn't the most efficient. A more modern v8 and a lighter frame/body (from composite materials) would be decent on gas mileage. Detroit should get back to what it used to do best, the large 4d family sedan. I look at the newer composite/aluminum engine tech, fuel injection, cylinder deactivation(on demand), and even the newer hybrid-electric transmission tech they have now and they could produce a kickass caprice. There hasn't been any real replacement for it since it was killed in the 90's. Even the top of the line Impala, which the caprice used to be based off of to compete with the Crown Vic LTD, isn't a replacement. RWD FTW! They can do it, but they aren't.

I would be perfectly happy with a 7.0l, naturally aspirated, hemi head V8 engine in a car that weighs 2500lbs. (Super Stock A-Body)

I can get 30mpg out of the 1900lb 4 banger. What kind of gas mileage you get out of your car?
the one above?

6 mpg, maybe. with 600 horsepower and running a 10 sec quarter mile, I wouldn't care about fuel economy.

You wouldn't be driving it on the street either.

I drive a 1987 Crown Vic. I get decent mileage, all things considered. i average about 16 to 18 mpg.

that's a matter of opinion.

Believe it or not, you can now buy a brand new 1968 Super Stock Hemi A-body. Its perfectly street legal, makes 700 horsepower and it can actually handle.

Just don't ask how much.

I prefer different motor types for different vehicle types. At different times, I've been ludicrously happy with :

1.5L 4 (1991 Civic LX)
2.0L 4 (1991 Prelude Si)
2.2L 4 (1999 Prelude SH)
3.8L 6 (1995 LeSabre)
4.6L 8 (1995 Cougar)
5.7L 8 (1999 Camaro)
2.8L 6 (1987 Ranger)

Bout the only motor I've hated with a passion was the 4 banger in the Neon. Total garbage.

I would normally not consider buying an older large American sedan with a V-8, but I did. An old man traded in a 1990 Crown Vic with a 5.0L V-8. I had the shop check it out and all we could spend was misc servicing for about $100. It was so clean, I had it detailed and it looks new. Also getting 21MPG overall, but as much as 24 on road trips.

Those are really reliable cars. Something to be said for an 'old-man' car Also easy to do a lot of mods that people put on Mustang GT 5.0s

None. The question is hypothetical also.

Wish I had a V8 in my car, but just have the V6. About the same gas mileage, but then I guess the LS1 does need 91 instead of 87 octane....

LS1 V8 would be worth that though

No wai, straight 8 for life!

This is really a dumb question, unless you are trying to prove people only care about image or status and not of actual performance when it comes to cars.

I'm pretty sure the V8 in the Monte is a piece of crap, as far as V8s go.
I'm pretty sure you're wrong. The 5.3L V8 in late model Monte Carlo's & Impala's is based on the LS-series of motors you find in F-bodies, GTO's, and Corvette's. It is cheap, reliable, and torquey as hell. Cheap to upgrade as well.

I drove an Impala SS with the 5.3l V8 and while it definitely had more torque than say my V6 Maxima it didn't feel all that quick. It certainly had a lot more torque steer though.
The engine itself is great. When you put it in a FWD car with an anemic 4-speed auto & economy gears, yeah it will feel like a dog.

Besides the new Impala's are 500lb+ heavier than your Maxima and yet manage same/slightly better performance.

the monte carlo SS has a V6 (assuming its the one based on the lumina) but i think all mustang GT's have V8's, so i think the 6 is in the monte.

I can get 60mpg out of the 450lb 0.65L 2 banger, and quicker acceleration too.

I think I'd have trouble fitting a V8 in my car without major structural problems, so I'd have to say no.

The new Monte Carlo SS has the same 5.3l V8 as the Impala SS, and those saying it's not quick have never driven one for any length of time or they don't know how to drive. It will do 0-60 in the mid to high 5's. I've driven an Impala SS since march 06 and done a fair amount of red light to red light racing with it and I have only been beaten once by a Cobra and he just barely nudged me out. I've beaten several standard GT's, ES350's, 350z's and a few other supposed bad ass cars. It takes a little practice to come off the line without losing traction, but once you figure it out it's a beast. I've beaten my best bud twice who drives a Charger SRT8, but he's not a very good driver and can't seem to get off the line without smoking the tires, I'm pretty sure if he could figure out how to launch it properly he could take me.

My wife and I have an 02 Monte Carlo SS. It's good at getting groceries, driving in the rain, driving in the snow, understearing, and generating body roll. It could be worse, it could have the 3.4 that's in the non SS versions. The 3800 Series II is very very reliable.
